Our Program Offers an Enhanced Range of Experiences Across the Breadth of Plastic Surgery
Our Curriculum
Emory’s integrated and independent plastic surgery residency programs are built on a tradition of excellence, innovation, and mentorship spanning more than fifty years. As the only plastic surgery training program in the state of Georgia, our residents benefit from exceptional case volume and diversity — with experiences ranging from routine to extraordinarily complex across the full spectrum of the specialty.
Training encompasses all major domains of plastic and reconstructive surgery: breast reconstruction and aesthetic breast surgery, cosmetic surgery of the face and body, traumatic and oncologic reconstruction, microsurgery, hand and peripheral nerve surgery, burn reconstruction, and pediatric and craniofacial surgery. Residents develop true operative independence in both emergency and elective settings, with graduated autonomy under the guidance of faculty who are nationally recognized leaders in their respective fields.
Our residents rotate through eight distinct clinical sites — including three tertiary care Emory hospitals, Grady Memorial Hospital (one of the nation’s largest Level I trauma centers), two high-volume Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta hospitals, the Atlanta VA Medical Center, free-standing ambulatory surgery centers, and a private practice plastic surgery center. This breadth of clinical settings exposes residents to diverse patient populations and practice models, ensuring that our graduates are prepared and confident in any environment.
Protected elective time during the senior years allows residents to deepen expertise in areas of personal interest, pursue global health experiences, or engage in dedicated research. Weekly didactic conferences, led by our world-class faculty, complement clinical training with a rigorous academic foundation.
The results speak for themselves: our graduates consistently match into competitive fellowships at top institutions, and go on to hold faculty positions at leading academic medical centers, serve in military medicine, and lead thriving private practices across the country.
