Overview
The Emory University School of Medicine welcomes applicants who have completed dental school and who seek a clinical and academic program covering all aspects of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Emory Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is Division in the Department of Surgery. The Division's CODA accredited residency accepts five residents per year in two training tracks: a four-year certificate program or an integrated six-year MD/oral surgery program. Upon successful completion, residents are eligible to apply for examination leading to certification by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Residents study and train with four full-time, two part-time, and 14 volunteer faculty encountering more than 1,800 major inpatient cases per year at Emory University Hospital, Emory University Hospital Midtown, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, and Grady Memorial Hospital. Residents and faculty provide comprehensive oral and maxillofacial surgery services to over 20,000 outpatients at recently renovated Emory Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic and the new Correll Pavilion Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic at Grady Memorial Hospital. Our faculty are recognized experts in trauma care, pathology, pediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthognathic surgery, surgery in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders and oral cancer/ microvascular reconstruction. Residents are fully integrated in all aspects of care provided by the faculty. Senior level residents track patients from initial visits through their surgical workup, respective procedures, and follow-up. Patients receiving care by Emory Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery come from the entire Metro Atlanta region comprised of seven million people including a large population of underserved patients.
In addition to a robust elective surgery schedule, Emory Oral and maxillofacial Surgery provides care to trauma patients at the only two ACS/State Level I trauma centers in the Metro Atlanta area, Grady Memorial Hospital and Children Healthcare of Atlanta, Egleston Campus.
Graduates of the four-year track receive a certificate of training and are eligible to apply for the Board exams of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Graduates of the six-year track complete an M.D. at the School of Medicine and receive a certificate in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Philosophy of the OMFS Residency Program
Emory Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is an integral part of Emory University School of Medicine and Emory Healthcare. Progression in the training program results in increasing responsibility for the resident while building a strong foundation in the art and science of surgery. With the increasing responsibility to the care of the patients and the support of the service comes increasing opportunities for the individual resident in participating in Medical Center’s very active research programs to participation in the Divisions and the School of Medicine’s global surgery outreach programs.
The three residents who are selected annually for the six-year integrated program are concomitantly accepted into the MD program at the Emory School of Medicine. The tuition for the Emory School of Medicine for the academic year is approximately $55,000 per year which is the responsibility of the resident. The total time in the medical school is 22 months. Assistance is available in the form of loans, scholarship support, and five months resident salary out of the 22 months in which the resident is on the OMFS Service.
