Overview
Emory University's one year Society of Surgical Oncology-approved Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship centers on multidisciplinary care of the breast patient. Our mission is to teach evidence-based clinical care, encourage inquiry with a research-focused approach, and develop leadership skills for future career opportunities and growth so that graduates can become leaders in academic or community-based breast programs. Our program provides breast surgical oncology training in diverse environments with a high-volume clinical experience complemented by a robust multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
Facilities
Fellows will rotate within the Winship Cancer Institute as well as at the Georgia Cancer Center for Excellence.
Facilities include:
The Winship Cancer Institute at Emory is a Commission on Cancer accredited Comprehensive Healthcare Network and the only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Georgia. This allows it to serve as a regional referral center attracting the most complex of cancer patients. Serving over 17,000 patients per year, Winship combines unparalleled compassionate care teams with dedicated physicians and researchers, all working to transform cancer care.
The Glenn Family Breast Center at Winship was established in 2013 based on a $10 million grant from the Wilbur and Hilda Glenn Family. Treating over 1,300 new breast cancer patients each year, a team of over 30 physicians provide multidisciplinary breast care with a full complement of supportive oncology resources.
The Georgia Cancer Center for Excellence at Grady Memorial Hospital is part of a Commission on Cancer Accredited Comprehensive Healthcare Network. The mission of the center is to reduce the number of lives lost to cancer in Georgia through prevention and screening, treatment, research, and education. In collaboration with key partners, the center provides patient services that emphasize access, customer service, cultural competence, and the highest level of ethics and fiscal responsibility. Recognizing that research is the key to improving all phases of cancer services, the center pursues research to improve patient outcomes, as well as basic scientific, clinical, and population-based studies.
Grady's Comprehensive Breast Health Center is the only public hospital program in the Southeastern United States to be fully accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a coveted national recognition of our expertise and results. The center provides hundreds of patients, many from disparate backgrounds, with comprehensive and multidisciplinary breast cancer care.
Clinical Rotations
There are over 1,300 breast cancer patients treated across the Emory/Grady systems each year, providing for a substantial clinical experience. Patient encounters include both benign and malignant disease. Fellows can expect to treat the full spectrum of breast cancer conditions, from ductal carcinoma in situ to advanced stage invasive disease.
Surgical exposure will include various localization techniques (wire, radioactive seed, SAVI scout), sentinel lymph node biopsy (targeted, radio-isotope, blue dye), oncoplastics, and nipple sparing techniques. The busy radiation and medical oncology services will provide a broad exposure to clinical trials, advanced radiation techniques including proton therapy, and ever-expanding genomic assay application/interpretation.
Rotations are often surgery-centered with layered opportunities for other specialty experiences, including breast imaging, medical oncology, psychiatry, social work, and physical therapy. Dedicated rotations are provided for plastic surgery, radiation oncology, and pathology. The month-long rotations are spread amongst the various hospitals, allowing for diverse and broad-based clinical exposure.
Conferences
Fellows will be expected to attend weekly conferences that include breast tumor boards, surgical grand rounds, monthly didactic lectures, and journal clubs.
Presentation at local, regional, and national meetings is encouraged, and fellows are expected to publish at least one abstract or manuscript during their training.
