Overview
The Emory/Children's Healthcare of Atlanta research fellowship is an institutionally funded and supported and offers training and instruction in health science and outcomes research. This fellowship is ideal for current or graduated general surgery residents, interested in a career in pediatric surgery. The fellows participate in and lead a variety of clinical research projects including retrospective reviews, database studies, prospective observational studies, and multi-institutional studies. Opportunities for research exist in the areas of clinical outcomes, surgical equity, quality improvement, pediatric trauma, and pediatric surgical critical care. The fellows participate in research activities of the Children's Pediatric Surgery Health Equity Center. Multi-institutional projects are established through the Eastern Pediatric Surgery Network, the PCPLC, PECARN, amongst others institutional collaboratives. The research program is supported by biostatisticians, program coordinators and data analytics. The fellows are mentored regularly by pediatric surgery faculty with monthly education in research principles and weekly mentoring meetings with the program director. Presentations at scientific meetings are encouraged and supported; fellows have a highly productive experience.
The research fellows have exposure to pediatric surgery educational conferences, multidisciplinary conferences, operative cases and clinical service as well since they participate in the clinical call schedule.
Interested applicants should email Program Director Hanna Alemayehu, MD, and provide a cover letter indicating their interest in the fellowship and a current CV. References will be requested as part of the application process.
Research Status and Opportunities
The academic faculty of the Emory Division of Pediatric Surgery are engaged in more than 50 active research projects. Since 2014, our faculty have averaged over 30 peer-reviewed publications per year and dozens of institutional, regional, national, and international podium presentations.
The variety of research projects in the division offer multiple opportunities for rewarding mentorship. Examples of our research activity can be found on the research page.
Opportunities exist to collaborate with undergraduates, medical students, students from the Rollins School of Public Health. Monthly research meetings serve as a forum for learning basic skills related to health services research, for practicing presentations, and for interacting with local researchers.
