Experience an Unparalleled Diversity of Cases
The surgical critical care year is spent at Grady Memorial Hospital and Emory University Hospital (EUH). EUH is an internationally acclaimed academic institution and tertiary referral center that has been named Georgia's number one hospital ten years in a row. It has 154 critical care beds in several specialized ICUs including cardiac, transplant, surgical, and medical units.
Fellows will spend four months in Grady's surgical ICU and a fifth month in its neurocritical care unit. During these rotations, fellows will also take trauma call at Grady.
Five months at EUH will follow: two months in the surgical and transplant ICU, two months in the cardiothoracic ICU, and one month on the acute care surgery service. The surgical and transplant ICU exposes fellows to complex physiology and surgical cases, while the cardiothoracic ICU allows fellows extensive experience with ECMO, right ventricular assist device (RVAD) insertion, left ventricular assist device (LVAD) insertion, cardiac and lung transplantation, and other advanced surgical interventions.
Two weeks of the year are then spent on the electronic ICU (eICU) at Emory, with the option of doing a four week eICU rotation in Australia. The remaining time is dedicated to electives based on the fellow's area of interest.
During the surgical critical care year, fellows will work with critical care boarded faculty who are also leaders in their respective fields, including hepatology, nephrology, neurology, anesthesia, emergency medicine, trauma, transplant, hepatobiliary, and cardiothoracic surgery. This varied and comprehensive training period will give fellows a solid foundation in critical care and prepare them for the critical care boards.
