Overview
Emory University Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is seeking highly qualified candidates for an advanced fellowship in thoracic transplantation and mechanical circulatory support (MCS). This clinically and academically rigorous program takes advantage of one the busiest cardiothoracic transplant, VAD, and ECMO programs in the nation. In 2023, Emory University performed 85 heart and lung transplants, over 70 surgical implanted durable VADs, and more than 250 temporary mechanical support devices (Impellas, RVADs, ECMO).
Clinical Responsibilities
Fellows will be involved in multidisciplinary patient evaluation and selection, perioperative optimization, deployment of temporary mechanical support, heart and lung transplant implantation, donor organ procurement, and postoperative management following transplantation. Donor organ procurement will involve both donation after brain death (DBD) and donation after circulatory death (DCD) with both ex-vivo and normothermic regional perfusion strategies. Emory utilizes several innovative thoracic transplantation procurement transportation devices (Paragonix SherpaPak Cardiac and LUNGguard Lung systems, Transmedics OCS Heart and Lung systems) which fellows will have extensive experience in using.
Clinical Trials and Research
Graduates will gain expertise in several leading technologies as part of a number of clinical trials at Emory. This includes the XVIVO perfusion system (one of the largest national enrollers), BiVAD support system, and BrioVAD (a novel left ventricular assist device system). Fellows are also encouraged to participate in a number of active clinical and translational research projects as part of the Emory Cardiothoracic Surgery Research Laboratory.
Additional Benefits
Applicants who are selected will serve as a clinical instructor and receive competitive salary and benefits package. Opportunities for professional development and continuing education will additionally be provided.
