Application Process
Each year, PGY-1 categorical residents are expected to submit an extramural and longitudinal studies application involving either clinical, basic science research, or advanced degree study proposals. Submissions are due the week of February 15th.
The application MUST include three documents:
-
a CV specifically tailored for this purpose
-
a letter of support from a faculty mentor
-
a proposal detailing the specific aims of your endeavor (PDF example of the specific aims document)
Fill out the writable PDFs below of the CV and specific aims forms. Once completed, save the forms and email them as attachments to Nena Buie, residency coordinator for the Emory General Surgery Residency Program.
Requirements for the Letter of Support
Letters of support should be exclusive and unique, printed on institutional letterhead, and signed and dated by the appropriate faculty mentor. In one-to-three sentences, the first paragraph should identify the research project by name/title and include a statement of support for the project/research.
The intro paragraph should be followed by one-to-three body paragraphs that state the goals of the research, describe the role of the mentee in the project as specifically as possible, and express why the mentee is the appropriate person to perform the work. If necessary, additional paragraphs are permissible.
The letter of support should be sent to:
General Surgery Residency Program

Once all application materials are reviewed, applicants will be notified by Dr. Michael Lowe, director of extramural studies for Emory's general surgery residency.
