Emory Winship Cancer Institute
The Emory Winship Cancer Institute is one of 54 National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers (CCC) and the only one in Georgia.
What does that mean?
NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers “are recognized for their scientific leadership, resources, and the depth and breadth of their research in basic, clinical, and/or prevention, cancer control, and population science, as well as substantial transdisciplinary research that bridges these scientific areas.”
Why does it matter?
The rapid pace of discovery and the improved cancer treatments that the NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers have helped pioneer over decades have increased the number of cancer survivors in the United States and improved the quality of patients’ lives immeasurably by:
- Developing and translate scientific knowledge from promising laboratory discoveries into new treatments for cancer patients.
- Serving their local communities with programs and services tailored to their unique needs.
- Disseminating evidence-based findings.
