Advanced Aortic Surgery Fellowship

Applicants to the Advanced Aortic Surgery Fellowship of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Emory University's School of Medicine must have successfully completed an ACGME-accredited cardiothoracic surgery residency program, and be eligible for board certification by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

The aortic fellow will receive advanced training in and be responsible for the following knowledge areas and skills sets, including, but not limited to:

• Treatment of aortic disease (aneurysms and dissection) utilizing both open and endovascular techniques;
• Preoperative evaluation, operative management, and postoperative patient care of complex adult surgical conditions, including major thoracic aortic surgery and complex/high risk cardiac surgery;
• Serve as surgical first assist on complex aortic procedures under the direction of the medical director and other cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons;
• Train other cardiothoracic surgery residents and/or fellows on the diagnosis and treatment of complex aortic disease;
• Interpretation and assessment of diagnostic imaging studies;
• Participation in both emergent and elective aortic and adult cardiac procedures;
• Independent completion of critical portions of the complex aortic procedures (i.e., key anastomoses, performance of re-operative sternotomy);
• Independent completion of basic cardiac and aortic cases at the direction or under the supervision of the medical director;
• Additional education and scholarly pursuits as determined by the medical director to support the mission of the Emory Aortic Center.
