2023 Educator Appreciation Day

In recognition of Educator Appreciation Day, the Recognitions Committee at Emory School of Medicine sent out a call for nominations for educators across the school who go above and beyond the call of duty as teachers and mentors. Emory educators were nominated by their peers and colleagues for their passion and skills to educate, encourage, and support scholars and learners across the university.

Dr. Bola Akinsola is a well-versed physician in the department of pediatric emergency. While working with her during multiple shifts, I have observed how she spends more time at bedside even in a busy emergency department to teach medical students, residents and fellows. She meets everyone where they are at and cares to find out what matters to you as a learner. Outside her shifts, she mentors a lot of residents and fellows in the area of quality improvement and has lots of passion for what she does.

Dr. Olamide Alabi is the definition of a physician who embodies compassionate and whole patient care. She is who I aspire to become as a physician and a surgeon. Moreover, her dedication to teaching fellows, residents, medical students, and other medical staff involved in patient care helps us aspire to do better every day for our patients.

Department of Human Genetics Nadia Ali Genetic Clinical Trials Center

Officially, Dr. Nadia Ali is the Assistant Program Director of the Genetic Counseling Training Program. As a faculty member from the inception of the program a decade ago, she has been a consistent support to students. This year she went above and beyond in creating a quarterly "process group" for cohorts of students to discuss their training experiences and stayed after hours to conduct it. She creates an inclusive environment where students feel valued, safe, and respected.

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine David Alter Emory University Hospital

Dr. David Alter is the co-director of the clinical chemistry rotation for pathology residents. He has made significant improvements in this rotation that have been accompanied by improvements in resident in-service exam scores, which are now well above the national average. He is also very engaged with medical student rotators, showcasing the importance of laboratory medicine.

Department of Family and Preventive Medicine Jeremy Amayo Emory PA Program

Dr. Jeremy Amayo teaches with case-based examples helping students learn with critical thinking. He has led our POCUS program teaching hand-held ultrasound in every organ system and has led our POCUS team to several national championships. He inspires students to understand complex concepts with excellent examples and engaged problem-solving. His teaching style is encouraging, and he is always available to answer questions.

Department of Neurology Aaron Anderson Emory University Hospital, Grady Memorial Hospital

Dr. Aaron Anderson is an incredible clinician and educator. He is so passionate about neurosonology and is willing to help teach at all hours of the day with challenging cases. He runs daily Zoom sessions with the residents and fellows during which he reads and teaches about neurosonology. His enthusiasm is infectious, and learners of all levels - including his colleagues - are so fortunate that he is a Neurologist here!

Dr. Alexandra Arges, who serves as the Medicine clerkship director for medical students at Emory University Hospital, is beloved by trainees on our EUH teaching service. She's also restarted our clinician-educator peer learning group, which is a wonderful resource for our faculty. She is incredibly dedicated and is regarded as a fantastic teacher and role model.

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Saja Asakrah Emory University Hospital

Dr. Saja Asakrah is well-admired for her great dedication for teaching. She has been passionate about supervising pathology trainees and mentoring their scholarship activities. She is the co-director of the medical student hematology laboratory workshop and played a major role in designing a virtual hematology course. She is also currently enrolled in the Emory Woodruff Health Educators Academy Teaching fellowship. She has an active role in educating the pathologists in Georgia being the Emory Lead editor of GAP newsletter. She played an important role in facilitating the implementation of the case-based curriculum that incorporates digital whole-slide pathology microscopy images with real-time medical student participation. She has been instrumental to the training and education of pathology residents by providing them with goals and objectives, education materials and weekly direct feedback.

Dr. Laura Aspey in the clinical chief of dermatology at Grady hospital. She has created an unrivaled learning environment within the Dermatology Clinic at Grady which incorporates and engages students and residents in learning and patient care.

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Vaidehi Avadhani Emory University Hospital, Grady Memorial Hospital

Dr. Vaidehi Avadhani is a surgical pathology director at Grady Memorial Hospital and is very involved with education of the clinical and pathology trainees. Despite her busy schedule, she takes the time for teaching and gives great importance to education. She is always ready to work with clinical faculty on difficult gastrointestinal and liver cases. She is easy to approach and always offers great suggestions to aid in diagnosis. She is an extraordinary pathologist and gifted teacher who enthusiastically and creatively spreads the knowledge of pathology to medical students, pathology residents and fellows. She developed a cytology teaching module through Emory canvas tool which enhances and expands practical and theoretical knowledge of cytopathology. She is kind, compassionate, motivational, and firm in her teaching approach and therefore always on the top list of favorite teachers in our department.

Dr. Anika Backster creates allyship among our faculty. She does so quietly by organizing our faculty to write about important events, memorials, and holidays from a wide range of traditions, religions, ethnicities and races. These educational compositions are typically personal and provide a wealth of information thereby educating all of us on the importance of diversity and inclusion.

Department of Human Genetics Cecelia Bellcross The Emory Clinic

Dr. Cecelia Bellcross is passionate about genetic counseling. She is the director of the genetic counseling master's program and advocates for the value of the specialty. She is an excellent mentor to her assistant program director and graduates outstanding genetic counselors that serve their patients and our healthcare system well. She also serves on the Interprofessional Team Training program working group that designs and implements an IPE program for approximately 1,400 WHSC students annually.

Department of Medicine Sivan Ben-Moshe The Emory Clinic

Dr. Sivan Ben-Moshe is an outstanding educator. She directs the M1 Aging and Dying course and thoughtfully overhauls it annually so the students have a unique experience. By doing so she can incorporate new material with each iteration. She is involved in multiple curricular design committees and thinks broadly and creatively about how to innovate in geriatrics, and has mentored many students along the way. Her residents and fellows sing her praises clinically, as do her patients! She is dedicated to sharing her knowledge and passion about caring for older adults. She mentors students, residents as well as fellows.

Dr. Lisa Bernstein's tremendous positive impact on scores of Emory medical students and residents, fellow faculty, and the greater community cannot be done justice in 100 words. The scope of her impact alone speaks to her generosity, investment in others’ success and well-being, and skills as an educator. Her desire to be on service on July 1 evinces her passion for teaching. Despite all of this, she makes the lucky med students in her small group feel valued, empowered, and infinitely supported. She is an incredibly supportive small group leader and excellent and engaging teacher in both the classroom and clinic. She is an understanding and truly thoughtful mentor. She continually goes above and beyond to cultivate a positive and supportive learning environment.

Dr. Caitlin Bradley leads the point of care ultrasound (POCUS) rotation for the anesthesiology residents. As a cardiac anesthesiologist, she provides a wealth of information not only for our trainees, but also for the trauma surgery fellows and emergency medicine ultrasound fellows. In addition, she has been a key teacher and mentor to fellow faculty members who are working toward certification in POCUS.

Dr. Darragh Brady has constructed an outstanding pediatric neuroradiology teaching curriculum and feedback program for the Emory radiology trainees. It is detailed and well constructed with appropriate helpful feedback for both the educators and the learners. Dr. Brady's educational program has enabled the faculty of the pediatric neuroradiology section to deliver consistent high quality teaching. The program has inspired radiology residents and receives consistent rave reviews from our trainees.

Dr. Ted Brzinski runs a unique program embedded in the Department of Radiology. He trains the imaging technologists that safely and effectively provide services to numerous patients at Emory and beyond. His graduates are not just techs; they are graduates of Emory University with a Bachelor of Medical Science degree. He does so with a dedication and passion for his students, faculty and staff.

Dr. Soma Bumpers is a servant leader. She has been a gifted educator her entire twenty-year tenure. Learners naturally reach out to her. She has worked tirelessly on developing a Fellowship for Advanced Practitioners, one of only a handful in the country. Because of her leadership style and success, she is also educating countless other advanced practitioners throughout the Emory healthcare system.

Department of Pediatrics Andres Camacho-Gonzalez Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Grady Ponce de Leon Youth and Family Clinic

Dr. Andres Camacho-Gonzalez is an outstanding educator who oversees both the Pediatric Infectious Disease fellowship training program and serves as the Associate Program Director for the Pediatric Resident training program. Dr. Camacho-Gonzalez also serves as a medical school Society Advisor. He is an inspiration to trainees conveying the importance of the delivery of compassionate care. Dr. Camacho-Gonzalez is especially committed to the care of children and adolescents living with HIV.

Dr. Carpenter, as the Director of Research for the Emory Medical Toxicology Department, is a selfless educator and advocate for students, residents, fellows, and his colleagues. As the PI on multiple federal grants, most would not have the capacity to engage others. However, Dr. Carpenter is not an ordinary educator. He enthusiastically, and non-judgmentally assists others to excel in research and translate their ideas into actionable improvements to the care provided to patients.

Dr. Dimitri Cassimatis leads with care and intent. He has created a comprehensive program with multiple interactive components, which helps students learn complicated physiology. As a lecturer, he is thorough and approachable. Most importantly, he consistently connects with and understands his students’ needs with admirable patience - I don’t know of any other Department Chairs who are as knowledgeable and humble as he is. He is an outstanding teacher at all levels of learning: from undergraduate medical education to mentoring junior faculty. He is gifted because he teaches by example. He was particularly skillful in navigating and supporting our students during a traumatic time with empathy, skill, and kindness. They do not make many like Dr. Cassimatis.

Dr. Britton Chahine, as a teacher and mentor, goes above and beyond for learners of all levels on a daily basis. As director of Gyn/Ob Simulation, she designs outstanding simulations monthly for the department’s residents and multiple times per year for other trainees and healthcare professionals. She works tirelessly to perfect simulation models and the corresponding curriculum. These opportunities to practice OR skills and emergency drills make our providers more confident and improve clinical outcomes.

Dr. Alfred Chahine is the consummate educator. He goes out of his way to model thoughtful, thorough behavior in and out of the OR. He always makes sure to engage and teach medical students about not only surgical principles but also best practices. Additionally, he is passionate about healthcare sustainability and is an incredible mentor in this space, connecting students with resources and mentoring OR research projects.

Dr. Jason Cobb is the associate program director of the renal fellowship program. He leads the curriculum committee, scholarly activity, and the renal section of the Internal Medicine Residency Core Curriculum. He is passionate about teaching trainees and patients in the community, serving as founding faculty advisor for the Kidney Disease Screening and Awareness Program where Emory undergraduate students are taught about chronic kidney disease and perform screening events in underserved areas of Atlanta.

Dr. Randi Connor-Schuler is one of the most gifted educators at Grady. One of her greatest strengths is her ultrasound skills, which she used to develop an ultrasound curriculum for fellows. She has run POCUS and advanced airway teaching sessions for fellows, residents, and students. She has been extramurally recognized in this area, and has served as instructor for several regional conferences in this domain. She received an award for excellence in teaching in our division in 2022.

Dr. Kim Curseen is the consummate mentor. She listens deeply to her mentees’ goals, aspirations, challenges, and needs. Through this deep listening, she’s able to effectively guide fellows to the steps needed for them to reach their greatest potential, both during their year of fellowship and in their career beyond fellowship.

Amber advises students with compassion while creating solutions that support the students’ mental health and progress. She creates an enthusiastic environment for learning.

Dr. Beth Davis is an educator that dedicates herself to her students. She runs multiple DPT courses and on top of that has been an integral leader in the Interprofessional Team Training program. Her innovative curriculums have trained thousands of learners and hundreds of facilitators. Because of her years of dedication to IPE she was recognized by her program and now leading a required IPE course for all of the DPT students. She also disseminates her work through publications and presentations.

Dr. Anees Dhabaan is the embodiment of a selfless educator and mentor. His dedication to residents in the department of radiation oncology serves as a shining example for effective clinical instruction in both didactic and mentorship contexts. As I see and do my best to emulate the extent to which Dr. Dhabaan commits himself to one-on-one training of residents and junior faculty, I recognize that every day Dr. Dhabaan continues to make me a better teacher. He has served as MD residency program physics course director since 2007, received the teacher of the year from our program, founded and directed the medical physics residency program in 2010, mentored many junior faculty with career advancement, and has served as national ABR examiner.

Dr. Karen Drexler is a seasoned medical educator and the founder of the Emory Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program. She has earned the admiration of our fellows and colleagues for her excellent teaching and accessibility. Despite being semi-retired, she remains committed to training future addiction psychiatrists. We are grateful for her invaluable contribution.

Dr. Douglas Falls has played a central role in orchestrating the Foundations of Medicine curriculum. His efforts as Foundations of Medicine curricular coordinator were highly regarded by students, faculty, and administrators. Dr. Falls is a very successful and creative course director and teacher. One example: he serves as Course Director of the Foundations of Medicine Neural Function course and teaches many of the classes in this course. The course includes two lab sessions and a small group session. An enhancement this past year was use of ScholarRx “Bricks” customized by Dr. Falls and ScholarRx self-assessment questions selected by Dr. Falls. (ScholarRx is a resource recently licensed by the SOM to promote clinical correlation of the basic science teaching and student preparation for the USMLE Step 1 exam.) The Neural Function course has been highly rated by the MD students and the SOM ECC Foundations subcommittee.

Dr. Michael Fiedorak serves as the associate PD for our pediatric anesthesiology fellowship, leading journal club meetings, difficult case conferences, and oral board preparation. His guidance of fellows in research projects has resulted in abstracts receiving first and second-place awards at the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia meetings in the last few years. He was voted teacher of the year by our fellows in 2022. He has also led senior medical students through research and clinical rotations.

Dr. Babar Fiza is an incredibly passionate teacher and mentor. Dr. Yousuf Khalifa is the Chief of Ophthalmology at Grady Memorial Hospital. He has significantly enhanced our clinical teaching especially in the area of cataract surgery. Dr. Khalifa has arranged regular wetlabs and cataract surgery simulation courses, programmatic step-wise learning processes in the operating room, and introduced newer technologies to our Grady clinics and operating room. His teaching courses for medical students who are interested in ophthalmology are also a top draw.

Dr. Amit Surapaneni is kind, sincere and approachable as an educator for our medical students, residents and fellow trainees in radiology. He takes incredible care and time teaching diagnostic and procedure skills in breast imaging to trainees across multiple sites. We feel very supported when we need help or ask for guidance from him. He is patient and treats learners as peers, making everyone feel like an equal member of the team.

Dr. Sejal Tamakuwala is a fantastic clinical instructor and lecturer who goes above and beyond for her department. She spends much of her free time advising students and trainees on future plans. As the associate clerkship director for the third-year obstetrics/gynecology rotation, she and her team revamped the curriculum to incorporate more interactive and hands-on learning, as well as recruiting new and diverse faculty to serve as instructors and mentors.

Dr. Yilang Tang is the training director of the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship and his rotation is one of the most loved by trainees. He is a well-respected physician, clinical educator and researcher. He cares deeply about trainees' professional and personal life and is a fierce advocate for trainee's needs. Dr. Tang takes every possible opportunity to create teachable moments, sharing his knowledge and skills in a clear and engaging manner. His motto is, "You can learn something new from every single patient." Under his directorship, the Emory Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship has trained many great physicians and leaders in the field.

Dr. Tekwani, is simply the best teacher, colleague, and mentor. Not only that, she continues to further her education inspiring others around her to do the same.

Dr. Andrew Tkaczuk has an amazing passion for teaching our students, residents and fellows. He worked with Anesthesiology to create a PGY-1 rotation for their residents to learn laryngeal anatomy and scoping skills which has been hugely successful! He oversees the departmental journal club and finds pearls of wisdom in every discussion. He is a source of knowledge in the field and career development as well.

Dr. Stephanie Tran supervises all outside rotators for the department of pediatric anesthesiology from PICU fellows to transport team members. With over 40 rotators a year and varying skills sets, this is a complicated endeavor. However, she manages to get each learner the best experience possible. She spends countless hours making their schedules and assignments, and she provides excellent intra-operative teaching. We continue to have more requests each year for new rotators because of her dedication.

Dr. Smyrna Tuburan, as an Associate Program Director in the Emory Radiology Residency and as a leader in medical student education, has made incredible efforts in advancing education in radiology, and pediatric radiology specifically. With a national shortage in peds radiology, her efforts are essential. These have included a newsletter to residents, a national recruitment video, schedule suggestions to bolster peds radiology, and a weekly formalized review of resident performance. Dr. Tuburan makes an enduring impact on trainees in Radiology at all levels. Also, as director of the Clinical Educator track within the Emory Radiology Residency she is mentoring the next generation of exceptional educators.

Dr. Varghese is the co-creator of "Trainee to Yay Me," a virtual national career development program developed through the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Hospital Medicine that has reached over 500 pediatric residents nationally. Dr. Qun Wang is an excellent teacher and has a sincere passion for trainee education, giving excellent lectures, creating teaching sets for Breast Pathology and Cytopathology and mentoring trainees on various research projects. Her low-key approach and dedication to teaching is greatly appreciated by residents as well as colleagues. Dr. Wang directs Breast Pathology rotation, routinely updates the rotation manual, and orients new rotating trainees, providing guidance and invaluable feedback. Dr. Wang has mentored many trainees on various research projects, which have resulted in national and international meeting presentations.

She started with the PA program less than two years ago and quickly became an invaluable member of our team. She is a dedicated advisor; students and peers regularly seek her out for her visionary and progressive approach to collaborative and simulated education, and students rely on her for years after graduation for support and guidance. Recently she has taken on leadership responsibilities and our program will continue to benefit from her expanded role.

Dr. Joyanna Wendt is one of our wards attendings at the VA and is dedicated to colleagues, residents and students. She has innovated a new program to help facilitate educational opportunities between medicine and surgery, two departments that interface with each other often. She takes the time to find a case within each surgical department that is then presented in a fashion to help faculty in medicine understand the process of thinking. She then facilitates a Q&A session with experts. She works hard to be a great teacher for them and a wonderful example of patient-centered care. Her intelligence and kindness make her stand out above the rest. She has greatly helped empower medicine faculty to provide better care to their surgical patients.

Dr. Michael Zdradzinski has been instrumental to resident education and medical educator development. As the Med Ed Fellowship Director, he mentors/sponsors future med ed leaders. He runs multiple curricular threads for our residents including cadaver labs, airway labs, medical education, and physician wellness curricula. He provides wellness seminars to other residency programs at the SOM and nationally. He is a dedicated bedside educator for our learners, and he mentors multiple on scholarly projects.
