Abigail Lott
- Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
Associate Professor
Overview
Dr. Lott is an Associate Professor and board-certified psychologist serving patients with a wide range of psychological symptoms. Her research focuses broadly on understanding the long-term impact of interpersonal trauma exposure (e.g. childhood maltreatment, domestic violence) and how emotion dysregulation serves as a pathway to the development and maintenance of trauma-related psychiatric outcomes, like posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety. Dr. Lott also focuses specifically on factors influencing intergenerational trauma-related risk and is working to identify modifiable treatment targets to address risk in mothers in pregnancy and postpartum periods. She incorporates clinical, behavioral, neural, physiological, and other biological measurement in her research to assist in better identifying clear mechanisms that may be targeted in treatment and improve psychiatric outcomes among traumatized individuals. Dr. Lott has multiple active research projects: 1) a longitudinal project studying neural and physiological markers of emotion dysregulation in postpartum mothers with PTSD and how maternal emotion dysregulation and reactivity relate to early parenting and infant outcomes in the first year of life; 2) a randomized controlled trial to examine the effectiveness of caregiver ACEs screening and brief provider intervention on infant outcomes in a Latinx pediatric primary care population; 3) a longitudinal study focused on understanding pathways of risk for PTSD-Alcohol Use Disorder comorbidity among Black adults through ecological momentary assessment (EMA) and genetic methods; and 4) a multisite randomized controlled trial comparing PTSD screening approaches for Black pregnant women utilizing obstetrics care in public hospital settings. Dr. Lott is Co-Director and Director of Treatment Research and Education of the Grady Trauma Project, a team focused on examining risk and resiliency factors for PTSD and other trauma-related disorders in civilian traumatized populations.
