Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Course

One individual gets an ultrasound done while other individuals watch

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is an emerging patient assessment tool that can be utilized for diagnostic and procedural purposes. Clinicians in a wide variety of specialties can utilize POCUS to improve bedside diagnostic assessments as well as improve safety and efficacy for procedural guidance. This half-day course will focus on image acquisition and interpretation of POCUS modalities applicable to a wide range of medical specialties. Online pre-learning tools will be available so your time at the course can be hands-on. This course will provide a comprehensive foundation of core POCUS knowledge so you can begin applying it to patient care. The course will utilize a small-group, hands-on format for practice on live models, as well as commercial ultrasound gel models to practice needle guidance.

Course Topics

  • Basic ultrasound physics and knobology
  • Cardiac POCUS
  • Thoracic POCUS
  • Peritoneal free fluid (including the FAST exam)
  • Ultrasound Guided Vascular Access
  • Case studies for clinical integration

Eligibility

All clinical faculty in the School of Medicine.

Time Commitment

This half day course is held in the Emory Faculty Office Building. Lunch is provided.

All interested candidates must submit an application form and CV. There is no limit to the number of applications from a department, but final selections will be made to ensure diverse representation across the School of Medicine and will be limited to 24 individuals.
