Course Overview

The School of Medicine Office of Faculty Academic Affairs and Professional Development is offering a leadership development course for faculty physicians and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) who are new to their clinical leadership positions.

Program Objectives

Many excellent clinicians elevated to their first leadership position benefit from preparation for the role. Questions often arise, such as:

  • What is my leadership persona?
  • How do I balance and align advocacy for my people with expectations of the organization?
  • What is my role in FPPE, OPPE and Peer Review?
  • What skills do I need to navigate changes and crises?
  • How do I manage unprofessional behaviors among colleagues?
  • How do I best support diversity, equity, and inclusion as a leader?
  • How might I promote a constructive culture?
  • How do funds flow in the organization and how do I partner with administration to understand and achieve the performance goals we are responsible for?

Eligibility

First-time practice directors, chiefs of service, hospital committee chairs, and other clinical leaders at Emory Healthcare, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Grady and the Atlanta VA. This program is designed to develop the skills needed by people in these roles and not for general development of those seen as having leadership potential. We are particularly hoping to serve leaders who have not had the opportunity to participate in our other leadership offerings such as the Junior Faculty Development Course and Em-ProLEAD.

Time Commitment

The course will be held in person from 8 a.m. to noon at the Emory Musculoskeletal Institute at Emory Executive Park on the following days:

  • Jan. 15
  • Jan. 29
  • March 19
  • April 16

Additionally, course participants will have the opportunity to participate in a Relationship-Centered Communication (RCC) Workshop on Feb. 26 or March 5 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the School of Medicine. The RCC Workshop was developed by the Academy of Communication in Healthcare and is facilitated by trained Emory faculty. The course teaches communication competencies that ensure healthcare professionals deliver high-quality, relational care. RCC Fundamental Skills represent foundational elements for a relationship-centered healthcare culture where all communication is effective, empathic, and equitable. Past attendees have found the communication skills honed during the workshop to be applicable in clinical, professional, and personal settings.
