2024 Researcher Appreciation Day

In recognition of Researcher Appreciation Day, the Recognitions Committee at Emory School of Medicine sent out a call for nominations for researchers across the school who are advancing the knowledge base in their field. Emory researchers were nominated by their peers and colleagues for their groundbreaking research, development of new technologies, and continued pursuit of novel and innovative ideas. Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Mohamed S. Abdel-Hakeem

Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Hakeem works on intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms of exhausted T cells during chronic viral infections and cancer. He collaborates with the vaccine, primate, and Winship cancer centers. Dr. Abdel-Hakeem has published 13 papers since coming to Emory in 2021.

Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology Olatunji Alese

Dr. Olatunji Alese leads numerous investigator-initiated clinical trials and is PI on cooperative group and industry-sponsored trials, which has led to multiple high-impact journal publications and treatment guidelines. His collaboration with trial networks (ECOG, NRG) and industry sponsors has opened trials at Winship so that our patients have access to new treatments early.

Dr. Pamela Allen is a clinical investigator focused on lymphomas, particularly T-cell lymphomas. She has developed a high-impact research program focusing on aspects ranging from quality of life to biologic correlates and disparities in care.

Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Mandakh Bekhbat

Dr. Mandakh Bekhbat is a promising new investigator who recently published several high-impact studies and was awarded a five-year NIH/NIMH K01 award. Dr. Bekhbat's team's research on inflammation in depression was featured on Your Fantastic Mind Season 6.

Department of Medicine Alexis Bender

Dr. Alexis Bender studies aging with disability and chronic disease, with an emphasis on social and intimate relationships and patient-provider interactions over the life course. Dr. Bender has provided insights into the acceptance, as well as facilitators and barriers, of home and community-based services among patients, especially those living with dementia and care partners, which have served as the basis for crafting state policies.

Dr. Valeria Cantos leads several NIH-funded clinical trials related to HIV prevention, including long-acting formulations of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)and HIV vaccines, as well as sexually transmitted infection prevention and treatment.

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Luisa Cervantes Barragan

Dr. Cervantes Barragan investigates mechanisms of intestinal immune system homeostasis to better define responses to pathogens and control of inflammation, as well as to discover novel interactions between intestinal microbiota and immune cell populations. Dr. Cervantes Barragan's work generates a better understanding of how the immune system controls pathogens in the intestinal tract.

Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics Suchitra Chandresakaran

Dr. Suchitra Chandresakaran studies cardiometabolic health including diabetes and hypertension in pregnancy and its short and long-term impact on maternal and neonatal health. Her work takes a dual pronged approach to 1) investigate biological mechanisms driving cardiometabolic risks in pregnancy and 2) build clinical and research programs focusing on treatments/interventions to mitigate the maternal risks.

Dr. Sarah Chisolm directs the Clinical Trials Unit and Center for the Study of Itch in the Department of Dermatology. She has effectively cultivated partnerships with industry to carry out pivotal trials and bring novel therapies to patients.

Department of Pediatrics Satheesh Chonat

Dr. Satheesh Chonat's research focuses on sickle cell disease and complement mediated disorders in pediatric populations. Dr. Chonat has discovered novel mechanisms of lung injury in sickle cell disease and identifying novel therapeutics.

Department of Cell Biology Hyojung Choo

Dr. Hyojung Choo collaborated with Dr. Woon-Hong Yeo on a study published recently in Nature Communications. These collaborative teams developed an all-in-one wearable drug efficacy assessment system to assess bulbar muscle function using amyotrophic lateral sclerosis animal models. This multidisciplinary team science research will allow for assessment of drug efficacy and development of therapies for degenerative neuromuscular diseases.

Dr. Sarah Cross' experience as a former hospice and palliative care social worker inspires and informs her research. Dr. Cross focuses on establishing evidence-based solutions to help medical and social systems meet the needs of seriously ill patients, particularly those experiencing poverty and/or homelessness and racially minoritized individuals.

Dr. Daniel Harper's research focuses on understanding the underlying mechanisms of pain processing and their disruption in chronic pain conditions using a combination of quantitative sensory testing and brain neuroimaging to probe the brain's pain processing pathways. Dr. Harper collaborates with other departments to gain insight into sensory hyper/hyposensitivity in autism and painful skin conditions.

Dr. Patricia Hwang is the Division of Hospital Medicine’s go-to physician for up-to-date information on diabetes and care of diabetic patients. Dr. Hwang's recent research includes outcomes in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis and COVID-19; a multicenter study of attitudes and behaviors toward hospital diabetes technology use; and QI efforts to improve post-discharge insulin adherence.

Department of Cell Biology Jay Jiang

Dr. Jay Jian has discovered new mechanisms of disease in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Frontotemporal Dementia using state-of-the art molecular, genetic, and cell-biological approaches. His work has been featured by journals for its impact and novelty. Striking examples are the identification of a gain of function mechanism in a novel motor protein mutation associated with ALS.

Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology Sumin Kang

Dr. Sumin Kang does groundbreaking research in understanding therapeutic resistance to cisplatin and in cancer metastasis. This high-profile work has been featured in high-impact journals and facilitated training of many talented students and fellows. Dr. Kang's research is at the interface of signal transduction, tumor metabolism, and mechanisms of metastasis, and has suggested novel approaches to therapy.

Dr. Seong Su Kang investigates Tau protein pathology and propagation in Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, with a particular emphasis on gender-specific mechanisms. Dr. Kang is co-PI in one NIH grant and has published 28 papers since he became a faculty member in 2021.

Department of Biomedical Informatics Nasim Katebijahromi

Dr. Nasim Katebijahromi develops cutting-edge AI to analyze novel markers of fetal growth, hypertension, preeclampsia and stress. This work directly supports a non-governmental organization (NGO) in significantly lowering maternal mortality & hypertension rates in indigenous Guatemalan women.

Dr. Dio Kavalieratos' work focuses on palliative care and serious illness. In addition to multiple NIH-funded projects, Dr. Kavalieratos is single-handedly growing the research enterprise for palliative care at Emory. Dr. Kavalieratos is well-published and he mentors numerous faculty and fellows through their own research/Masters programs.

Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics Alison Kohlmeier

Dr. Alison Kohlmeier uses novel techniques to describe the memory T cell populations in both cisgender and transgender/non-binary people assigned female at birth. A better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of immunity in the female reproductive tract will allow for the development of state-of-the-art interventions to treat and prevent sexually transmitted infection-associated diseases in women.

Dr. Elizabeth Krupinski examines the effects of image manipulation on clinical observer performance, role, experience/training and fatigue as they impact accuracy and efficiency. Her seminal eye-tracking studies revealing the causes of medical error have guided the field for 30+ years and have shown that AI can now be used to reduce errors.

Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Benson Ku

Dr. Benson Ku examines the impact of gene-environment including neighborhood characteristics on conversion to psychosis among adolescents at high-risk. A leader in the Grady Psychosis Program, Dr. Ku's research funded from a National Institute of Mental Health K23 integrates public health, neuroscience, and developmental studies to discover novel individual and neighborhood-level targets for interventions aimed at preventing or mitigating psychosis.

Dr. Xiaoxian Li is a pioneer in defining the diagnostic criteria for breast diseases. Dr. Li's recent publications re-defined the diagnostic criteria for malignant phyllodes tumor, which will lead to optimal patient treatment.

Department of Biochemistry Xu Liu

Dr. Xu Liu's work, based on the mechanic studies of drug action, aims to drive the development of new, safer, and more efficacious, anti-inflammatory therapies. Dr. Liu recently was awarded an NIH R35 MIRA grant to understand how steroid receptors control gene expression through their intrinsically disordered regions in condensates and to unravel the role of non-steroidal treatments for muscular dystrophy.

Department of Family and Preventive Medicine Jane Lowers

Dr. Jane Lowers' work focuses on end-of-life planning, especially for minorities, people with dementia, and those without close family support; caregiver health, well-being, and experiences; aging without family caregivers; and medical aid in dying. Dr. Lowers studies the gaps between what people want at the end of life and what is available to them, using a social science lens to examine individual, health system, and societal barriers and opportunities.

Dr. Xiaodong Lu has made several important discoveries in genetic and epigenetic regulations of prostate cancer, which paved the ways to clinical trials of lipid inhibitors and CBP/p300 inhibitors in treatment-resistant, late-stage prostate cancer.

Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology Tobey MacDonald

Dr. Tobey MacDonald is a leading investigator in the treatment of high-risk brain tumors for which there is no cure. Dr. MacDonald is leading two very exciting research studies to attempt to identify the most potent drugs for patients' high-risk disease. Dr. MacDonald's research has the potential to save money and patient time as well as potentially save patients from bad side effects of drugs that his laboratory tests have indicated won't work.

Department of Pediatrics Lauren Middlebrooks

Dr. Lauren Middlebrooks' research is focused on improving sexually transmitted infection, particularly HIV, screening in the pediatric emergency department. By identifying undiagnosed HIV cases and linking patients to essential care, Dr. Middlebrook's work changes teenagers' lives via early intervention and reducing transmission risk. It is a powerful advocacy effort that transforms community health.

Department of Medicine Lesley Miller

Dr. Lesley Miller’s research focuses on improving hepatitis C (HCV) outcomes for underserved populations. Dr. Miller led a team at Grady to evaluate a rapid point-of-care HCV RNA test that informed FDA approval of the device. Dr. Miller is currently partnering with collaborators to study novel HCV tests.

Department of Pediatrics Claudia R. Morris

Dr. Claudia Morris is a seasoned clinical trialist who has succeeded in proving that sickle cell disease is an arginine-deficient syndrome. Through multiple trials, she has opened new avenues of treatment targeting nutritional intervention, ameliorating pain, and improving clinical outcomes including quality of life in youth with sickle cell disease. Dr. Morris is also helping to pioneer the foundation for pediatric emergency department HIV testing.

Department of Surgery Lauren B. Nosanov

Dr. Lauren Nosanov, Associate Director of Research for the Walter L. Ingram Burn Center at Grady, has interests in critical care management, patient-centered outcomes, and process. Since she came to Emory six months ago, Dr. Nosanov has hit the ground running with four multidisciplinary outcomes-centered presentations accepted for the Southern Region Burn Conference, and three oral resident case presentations across multiple forums.

Dr. Adegboyega Olayode has led studies of cancer disparities, cancer & pollution, and multidisciplinary QI projects to ensure appropriate treatment of H. pylori in hospitalized patients at Emory University Hospital Midtown. This work has increased treatment rates from 50% to 90%.

Dr. Sho Ono is the leading expert on actin and actin regulatory proteins. Internationally recognized for discovering that actin regulatory proteins are required for the assembly and maintenance of sarcomeres, the units of muscle contraction, Dr. Ono has received NIH grants as a PI since 2007 and has published 83 papers.

Dr. Philip Santangelo's work focuses on designing and delivering mRNA vaccines and treatments to prevent and cure diseases, including infectious diseases, autoimmune diseases and cancers. Dr. Santangelo's work, which advances the field of mRNA-based drugs that directly modulate the body's immune system for improved immune function, employs cell therapy, combining mRNA-expressed antigens and gene modulators to prevent and treat diseases.

Dr. Nikki Schmitt is focused on preventing hearing loss associated with head and neck cancer treatment. Specifically, she has an NIH-funded trial that studies the impact of chemotherapy on patients being treated for head and neck cancer.
