Richard Goodman MD
Overview
Richard A. Goodman, MD, JD, MPH, served as Program Director of the Emory Preventive Medicine Residency/Fellowship Program during 2016 - 2023, and now assists in supporting the operation of the Emory Academic Internal Medicine Center; he also serves as Professor of Medicine in Emory's Department of Family and Preventive Medicine and has had long-term affiliation appointments in Emory's Rollins School of Public Health. From 1978 - 2015, he worked for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in leadership and staff positions. Following the completion of his internal medicine residency in 1978, Dr. Goodman joined CDC's Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Program. Other staff and leadership positions were Senior Medical Advisor, DHHS' Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health and CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion; Editor-in-Chief of CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) Series; Associate Director of CDC's Epidemiology Program Office; and founding Co-Director of CDC's Public Health Law Program. Dr. Goodman received his medical degree and completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and completed a fellowship in geriatric medicine and earned a law degree at Emory University. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Preventive Medicine, and Geriatric Medicine. A Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Public Health Service during 1978 - 2006, Dr. Goodman held the grade of Medical Director (CAPTAIN: O6).
His areas of interest include medical and public health workforce development, applied public health practice, addressing the national challenges of multiple chronic conditions among the expanding population of older adults, and teaching and conducting training in scientific writing and publication. In addition to having been Editor-in-Chief of CDC's MMWR Series, Dr. Goodman served as Associate Editor of CDC's peer-review journal Preventing Chronic Disease and has led- or co-authored over 140 papers, chapters, and other publications on topics in applied epidemiology, including surveillance and investigation of acute infectious disease outbreaks, and in chronic disease and injury prevention and control. He served as the lead editor of the DHHS's Strategic Framework on Multiple Chronic Conditions, the founding Editor-in-Chief of the CDC text Law in Public Health Practice (Oxford Univ. Press), and Co-Editor and major contributing author to the 4th Edition of the CDC text The CDC Field Epidemiology Manual (Oxford Univ. Press).
