Overview
Dr. Charles' primary focus is patient care: the patient always comes first in all considerations. This is achieved not only with procedural expertise, but also with empathic and compassionate care. Dr. Charles believes in close and constant communication with referring physicians for optimal patient care, management, and follow-up. His great smile and wonderful demeanor usually induce a calming effect on patients who are always encouraged to engage in their own care. The simplest approach to treatment is always chosen to bring about the most effective procedural and patient outcome. This patient-centric approach includes prompt procedure scheduling, an optimized procedural experience, and longitudinal follow-up, as well as a strong, positive collaborative approach with nurses and technologists.
An integral part of patient care in the academic setting includes formal and didactic teaching fo medical students, residents, and fellows.
Particular clinical interests include the following:
Angiomyolipoma/Tuberous Sclerosis Management
Arteriovenous Malformation Embolizations
Biliary Interventions
Pelvic Congestion Syndrome Treatment
TIPS Creation
Uterine Artery Embolization
Varicocele Embolization
Research Statement:
Research interest is clinical in focus, primarily in portal hypertension and transplant interventional radiology. Current investigations include improvement of accuracy of indirect hepatoportal venous pressure measurements; the left-to-left TIPS. Research investigations are often done in collaboration with medical students, residents, and fellows. This includes mentorship to further spark interest in research and research methodologies.
Dr. Charles earned his medical degree from the Perlman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania. After a transitional year at St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center in New York City, he completed radiology residency and fellowship training in interventional radiology at NYU Medical Center.
