The Transitional Year Internship is sponsored by the Department of Internal Medicine in the Emory School of Medicine and meets the standards of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). It has a total of 8 positions designated for individuals matching for either diagnostic radiology or interventional radiology residency at Emory. These radiology-specific positions constitute the Transitional Radiology Preliminary Program.
Other positions in the Transitional Year Internship program are designated for other advanced specialty programs such as neurology, ophthalmology, dermatology, radiation oncology, and physical medicine and rehabilitation.
There are undesignated positions traditionally reserved for Emory and Morehouse School of Medicine students wishing to stay in Atlanta an additional year before continuing on to their advanced programs elsewhere; however, these positions may be open to outside candidates at times. If you interview in either of our radiology residency programs, more instructions will be sent to you about how to apply for and rank the Transitional Year Internship, which you also can find here.
Transitional Radiology Preliminary Program
The overall goal of the Transitional Radiology Preliminary Program is to produce well-rounded physicians ready for radiology residency and provide a well-balanced training experience through a variety of clinical settings and hospital environments. In addition to the clinical service, interns participate in a variety of educational activities such as daily educational noon conferences, small-group sessions, and our monthly Transitional Year Core Lecture series.
Coming to Emory for your transitional year offers the opportunity for early acclimation to the large and complex Emory system, introduction to Emory Radiology faculty and upper-level residents, a head-start on longitudinal research/quality improvement projects, and solid relationships with residents training in other subspecialties at Emory.
