About

The Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences offers a one-year accredited fellowship position in abdominal imaging. The fellowship includes training and experience in all aspects of abdominal radiology including CT, abdominal/pelvic and vascular sonography, abdominal/pelvic MRI and peripheral MRA, and fluoroscopy. Image-guided biopsy and abscess drainage experience also is available. Participation in ongoing research is encouraged and supported. The program strives to prepare individuals for an academic or specialized private practice career. The program is accredited by the ACGME through June 2020 but will no longer be accredited starting July 2020.

Director: Jeffrey Neitlich, MD

Associate Program Director: Ayushi Gupta, MD

Program Coordinator: Tiffany Easter

Equipment

The fellowship utilizes Emory University Hospital, Emory University Hospital Midtown, Grady Memorial Hospital, and The Emory Clinic to provide a diverse case experience. Equipment includes multi-slice CT scanners (a combination of GE, Siemens, and Philips equipment), multiple 1.5 and 3 Tesla magnets (predominantly Siemens), and Philips and GE state-of-the-art ultrasound rooms as well as digital fluoroscopic rooms. A GE PACS system is in place at Emory University Hospital, Emory University Hospital Midtown, and The Emory Clinic. A Philips I-Site system is in place for ultrasound, CT, and MRI at Grady.

Patient Population

The patient population served by the Emory Healthcare system is large and diverse. The fellowship provides training related to a well-established transplantation service (liver, kidney, pancreas, and bone marrow), two dedicated cancer centers, and three different emergency rooms. Extensive experience with medical and surgical oncology includes hepatobiliary, pancreatic, gynecological, hematological, dermatological, and urological pathology. The three emergency departments located at Grady Memorial Hospital, Emory University Hospital, and Emory University Hospital Midtown provide vast exposure to common and uncommon illnesses and conditions. As the region's premier level-1 trauma center, Grady additionally offers exposure to abdominal/pelvic trauma cases.

Fluoroscopy

Fellows will receive training in routine barium studies as well as fistulograms, defecography, and ERCP interpretation.

Sonography

Extensive experience is provided in abdominal and pelvic sonography. Gynecological ultrasound comprises the vast majority of pelvic sonography and includes training in hysterosonography. Training in obstetric ultrasound (OB/US) is available if requested. Experience with all aspects of vascular ultrasound is provided including training in color Doppler sonography of the carotid arteries, transplant sonography, abdominal Doppler, and peripheral vascular sonography. An additional focus is thyroid and postoperative neck ultrasound. There has been increasing use of intra-operative sonography, mostly for hepatic resection. The Division of Abdominal Imaging collaborates with hepatic surgeons in cases of hepatic resection, radiofrequency ablation, and cryosurgery.

CT

State-of-the-art multi-detector CT is performed at all facilities with dual-energy at some locations. Fellows will receive training in CT and CT angiography as well as 2 and 3-D reconstructions on a variety of workstations. Electives in CT colonography and CT coronary angiography are available.

Abdominal and Pelvic MR

Fellows will receive extensive training in MR imaging of the liver, kidneys, adrenals, pancreas, and of the male and female pelvis. An elective in cardiac imaging is available.

Interventional Procedures

At this time, a large number of solid abdominal organs are biopsied using CT or ultrasound guidance. The division performs percutaneous lung biopsy and other thoracic interventions as well as lymph node and thyroid biopsies. Other non-vascular interventional procedures include percutaneous abscess drainage, percutaneous cholecystostomy, percutaneous radiofrequency tumor ablation, paracentesis, thoracentesis and sclerosis of hepatic and renal cysts and lymphoceles. In the future, some or all of these procedures may be performed by the Division of Interventional Radiology and if so, electives will be available.
