About
Thank you for interest in applying to the Emory University Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program. Our applicants come from a wide variety of backgrounds. We seek candidates who have diversity in both their academic and personal experiences. For this application year, we will have 14 entry-level (R1) diagnostic radiology resident positions available.
Applications for the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program (usually PGY-2 through PGY-5) must be made through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We fill our Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program positions through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

PGY-1 Transitional Program
The Transitional Radiology Preliminary Program is sponsored by the Department of Internal Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine and meets the standards of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The program is part of the larger Transitional Year Internship Program at Emory which has a total of 24 positions. There are currently seven (7) positions available each year in Emory Radiology and are designated for individuals matching for either the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program or the Interventional Radiology Residency Program at Emory. The other 17 positions are designated for other advanced specialty programs at Emory such as Neurology, Ophthalmology, Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Radiation Oncology and PM&R.
The overall goal of the Transitional Radiology Preliminary Program is to produce well-rounded residents and provide a well-balanced experience through a variety of clinical settings and hospital environments. In addition to clinical service, there are a variety of educational activities. Interns will participate in daily educational noon conferences, small group sessions, and our monthly Transitional Year Core Lecture Series.
Coming to Emory for your preliminary year has these added benefits:
- Earlier acclimation to the large and complex Emory system;
- Earlier introduction to the Department of Radiology faculty and upper-level residents;
- Opportunities in starting longitudinal research/quality improvement projects; and
- Solidification of relationships with other residents practicing at Emory in other subspecialties.
Curriculum
Monthly rotation distribution for radiology interns includes the following:
- 5 internal medicine ward months
- 1 medical ICU month
- 1 combined ER month (2 weeks adult/2 weeks pediatric)
- 1 primary care month
- 2 radiology elective months**
- 2 additional electives (at least 1 in internal medicine)
** A maximum of 2 months of radiology are allowed by ACGME during your internship. Rotations in the Department of Radiology include abdominal imaging and either neuroradiology or interventional radiology depending on future residency (DR or IR). Interventional radiology residents will rotate through abdominal and interventional radiology while diagnostic radiology residents will rotate through neuroradiology and abdominal imaging unless there are extenuating circumstances. There also is the opportunity to participate in emergency medicine ultrasound which is administered by the Department of Emergency Medicine (and does not count toward the 2-month radiology limit).
Electives
Interns have the opportunity to shape their Transitional Year to accommodate their academic interests. Although there is a wide breadth of options for electives (one of which has to be internal medicine), the following are examples of established electives:
- Neuropathology
- Emergency Medicine Ultrasound
- Ophthalmology
- Research
- Rheumatology
- Pathology
- Ocular Pathology
- Neuro-ophthalmology
- Palliative Care
- Surgical ICU
- Pain Management
- Neurology Movement Disorders
- Dermatopathology
- Sports Medicine
- EEG/Neurophysiology
- Epilepsy
- Allergy/Immunology
Instructions for Application
Although the Emory Transitional Radiology Preliminary Program (PGY1 year) is administered by the Emory Transitional Year Program, the application process for the 2 programs is different.
If you want to be considered for the Transitional Radiology Preliminary Program, you must still send an application through ERAS to the main Transitional Year Internship Program (1113999PO) even though you are not technically applying to the main Transitional Year Internship Program. This is the only way to assure all of the information needed for your internship is available to the main Transitional Program should you match here in the Transitional Radiology Preliminary Program.
The 2 programs have different numbers in the NRMP match. Please be sure you are using the NRMP number for the Transitional Radiology Preliminary Program (1113999P3) when you make your secondary rank list for Emory Diagnostic Radiology. You cannot match into the Transitional Radiology Preliminary Program if you do not match to the Emory Diagnostic/Interventional Radiology program.
That said, there is no guarantee that you will get a spot in the Transitional Radiology Preliminary Program even if you match at Emory for the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program. The popularity of the internship is compounded by the introduction of the IR/DR program (whose applicants are also vying for transitional year spots). Please make sure to include alternative internship programs to your secondary rank list.
Important NRMP Numbers
If you want to be considered for the Transitional Radiology Preliminary Program, you do not need to interview separately with the main Transitional Year Internship Program. Your Radiology interview is sufficient.
If you want to rank the main Emory Transitional Year (non-radiology) Program on any secondary list use the main Transitional Year Internship Program NRMP number 1113999PO.
Review of Process
- Apply to Advanced Radiology Program (Diagnostic or Interventional Radiology) in ERAS
- Apply to General Transitional Year Internship Program (1113999PO) in ERAS
- Interview with Emory Radiology
- Rank Diagnostic or Interventional Radiology Program primary rank list
- Rank Transitional Radiology Preliminary Program (1113999P3) in the secondary rank list followed by other preliminary programs or the Non-Radiology Transitional Year Internship Program NRMP number (1113999PO).
