Vitreoretinal diseases and disorders
Vitreoretinal (retina) specialists are ophthalmologists specializing in the medical and/or surgical treatment of retina diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinal detachment, macular holes, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), retinoblastoma, and diabetic retinopathy. Clinicians in this field complete a three-year ophthalmic residency followed by a one- or two-year fellowship in vitreoretinal disease and/or surgery.
Emory Eye Center retina surgeons have developed techniques and instruments for surgery on the retina and vitreous that are used by ophthalmic surgeons across the globe. The Center's research and clinical faculty are well-regarded for pioneering retinal research, clinical trials, new laser treatments, and new approaches for macular translocation surgery.
