Emory Eye Center is educating the next generation of vision care professionals
The Emory Eye Center’s physicians, surgeons, researchers, and vision care specialists provide the foundational clinical training that makes the Emory Department of Ophthalmology a top-tier educational and medical institution. Medical students, residents, and fellows are actively mentored to become a seamless part of the ophthalmological care provided in multiple clinical settings.
Comprehensive Ophthalmology
Residents and fellows gain medical and surgical experience in first-line treatments for a broad range of disorders including macular degeneration, uveitis, cataracts, dry eye, conjunctivitis, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and various retinal problems.
Cataract, Cornea and External Disease
Residents and fellows gain experience in the medical and surgical treatment of cataracts, keratoconus, corneal abrasions, corneal transplantation, corneal infectious and inflammatory diseases, dry eye syndrome, conditions that affect the outer layers of the eye, and refractive errors, and astigmatism.
Glaucoma
Residents and fellows gain medical and surgical experience from nationally recognized specialists in various treatments, including prescription eye drops, laser and microsurgery. Our glaucoma service has developed innovative instruments, surgical techniques and laser procedures that treat adults and children.
Ocular Oncology and Pathology
Residents and fellows gain medical and surgical experience treating patients with eye, eyelid, and orbital tumors, including ocular melanoma, retinoblastoma, lymphoma, periocular and other tumors of the eye and surrounding tissue. Training emphasizes diagnosis, clinical care, surgery and radiation treatments.
Oculoplastics
Residents and fellows gain experience in reconstructive surgery for children and adults to improve appearance and to treat disorders including tear production and lacrimal system, brows, the area of the face adjacent to the eye, and the bones around the eye.
Optometry
The Optometry Section focuses on the delivery of routine and annual eye exams, specialty contaact lenses and low vision services. Our clinicians prescribe specialty eyewear for pediatric, low vision, high power, difficult fits, bi-optics, sportswear, sunglasses, special filters, and corrective prism. As a major purveyor of primary eye care, this section actively collaborates with the nine other clinical specialties in the Emory Eye Center, making referrals for medical and surgical treatment as needed.
Neuro-Ophthalmology
Residents and fellows gain medical and surgical experience with brain disorders that may affect vision. Working with Emory’s Brain Health Research Center, Neurological Surgery, and Pituitary Center, physicians address a variety of underlying neurological problems, including stroke, MS, trauma, and tumors.
Ophthalmic Genetics
The Ophthalmic Genetics team at Emory addresses the spectrum of hereditary vision diseases and disorders by bringing together the clinical and research expertise of clinicians from multiple subspecialties.
Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus
Residents and fellows gain medical and surgical experience diagnosing and treating children with eye disorders, from general eye care and the need for eyeglasses to the most complex eye diseases including retinopathy of prematurity, retinoblastoma, and pediatric orbital eyelid issues.
Uveitis and Vasculitis
Uveitis and vaculitis are inflamatory conditions that affect the uvea and blood vessels, respectively. This group of diseases may also affect the retina, optic nerve, lens, and vitreous, leading to reduced vision or blindness if not detected and treated.
Vitreo-retinal Surgery & Medical Retina
Residents and fellows gain medical and surgical experience in retina-related diseases including AMD, retinal detachment, macular holes, diabetic retinopathy, ROP, cancers of the eye, and genetic disorders. Techniques and instruments developed by EEC surgeons are used across the globe
