150 years of training vision professionals
As the only tertiary referral ophthalmology center in a city of more than 6 million, the Emory Eye Center offers an ideal environment for physician education, professional development, and continuous learning. Our educational program offers opportunities for in-depth training and mentorship for medical students, residents, fellows and doctoral researchers. A heavy emphasis is placed on learning from ongoing clinical and research experience. Residents and fellows gain valuable experience working with diverse patient populations of all ages.
Medical Student Education
The Emory Department of Ophthalmology offers multiple opportunities for both Emory School of Medicine students and students from other medical schools to gain exposure to the field of ophthalmology.
Ophthalmology Residency
Emory Department of Ophthalmology offers six residents admission to a four-year program that meets all requirements for certification by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is fully approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Optometry Residency
The Emory Department of Ophthalmology now offers a one-year graduate residency focusing on ocular disease with an emphasis on cornea and contact lenses. The program provides advanced clinical expertise beyond what is provided in a doctor of optometry program.
Ophthalmology Fellowships
Each year, 12-14 physicians join the Emory Eye Center to receive subspecialty training in several areas: cornea, glaucoma, global ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmology, ocular oncology/pathology, pediatric ophthalmology, and retina.
Post-graduate Education and Research
The Emory Vision Training Grant (VTG) program provides intensive basic science training to both pre- and postdoctoral fellows who will become outstanding vision researchers. Subjects include normal ocular processes as well as corneal diseases, retinal choroidal diseases, cataracts, glaucoma, and disorders of visual processing.
Accreditation
The Emory University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians. In addition to educational programs, the Emory Eye Center hosts two annual conferences, the Southeast Ocular Oncology and Pathology (SEOP) and the Southeastern Vitreoretinal (SEVR), for which CME credits are available.
