Emory Eye Center's Summer Internship Program

The Emory Eye Center is excited to offer a summer research and mentorship program for underrepresented minorities interested in the field of ophthalmology.

Students will be exposed to clinical ophthalmology through shadowing opportunities at Grady Eye Clinic. Additionally, students will be introduced to vision research through mentorship and hands-on experience with our Emory Eye Center research faculty.

Participants will be required to attend basic science and clinical research weekly lab meetings and present at journal clubs. Other responsibilities include attending grand rounds and department conferences. Our goal is to provide comprehensive exposure to the field of ophthalmology, engage through mentorship, cultivate curiosity and discovery through vision research, and provide networking opportunities for students.

The Application Process

What is the Emory Eye Center's DEI SEED program?

The Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Summer Eye Experience in Diversity (SEED) internship is an eight to 10-week internship designed to introduce undergraduates and medical students (between their first and second year) to the challenges and rewards of a career in ophthalmology. The program recognizes the importance of diversifying the field of ophthalmology, so it places a heavy emphasis on selecting interns who are from underrepresented groups and/or disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds.

Who should apply to the DEI SEED program?

The DEI SEED program is focused on giving students who have an interest in ophthalmology a chance to explore the field. Applicants should be either in college or in between their first and second years of medical school when they start the internship. Underrepresented minorities and those from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

What can I expect from this experience?

The selected intern will shadow working ophthalmologists, fellows and residents at the Veteran's Affairs (VA) eye clinic, the Grady Hospital eye clinic, and the Emory Eye Center. They will also work alongside researchers from the Department of Ophthalmology's Research Division.

How do I apply?

Applications for a summer placement in the DEI SEED internship are accepted beginning in January each year, with an application deadline sometime in March. Interns for the summer of 2024 have already been selected. When the next cohort opens up, applicants should be prepared to submit

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Personal statement that describes their interest in ophthalmology and their career goals (no longer than one page)
  • One letter of recommendation
  • Available dates for completing the internship  if selected
When can I apply?

The 2025 DEI SEED application is now open. Deadline to apply is March 7.
