Ghazala O'Keefe
Overview
Ghazala A. Datoo OKeefe, MD, joined the Emory Eye Center in 2015. Dr. OKeefe brings expertise in medical retina and uveitis to the Eye Center, helping care for an expanding uveitis patient population. She is the director of the Medical Retina and Uveitis fellowship and is the Service Director for the Section of Uveitis and Retinal Vasculitis.

Dr. OKeefe received her MD from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2010. She completed a residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Southern California (USC) and the Doheny Eye Institute, followed by a medical retina and uveitis fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the Doheny Eye Institute.
Her primary practice location is the Emory Eye Center main location on the Emory University/Emory Healthcare campus. Her clinical work focuses on inflammatory and infectious diseases of the eyes as well as retinal degenerations, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and diabetic retinopathy.
Dr. OKeefe teaches medical students as well as ophthalmology residents and fellows at the Eye Center. In 2016, she helped lead a successful effort to increase access to more effective, higher-cost injection medications for patients at Grady Medical Center. She worked on collaborative projects with other departments to improve co-ordination of patient care for those with complex eye disease.
Her research interests include infectious and auto-immune diseases of the eye, AMD, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal imaging modalities.
Dr. O'Keefe is has completed courses at Emory in Quality Improvement, Health Services Research, and the Emory Professional Leadership Enrichment and Development Program (EM-ProLEAD). She has served as a founding member for Emory Alliance for Women in Medicine and Science (EAWiMS) and for Women in Ophthalmology at Emory (WOE).
National Recognition
She is a member of the Online Education Committtee for the American Academy of Ophthlamology (AAO), is the uveitis section editor for EyeWiki, and serves on the Executive Board of the American Uveitis Society (AUS).
She has been an invited speaker at regional, national, and international conferences and is the Director of the Southeastern Vitreoretinal Seminar, held yearly in Atlanta, GA.
Dr. OKeefes peer-reviewed articles have been published in a number of leading journals, including Ophthalmology, Ocular Immunology and Inflammation, Survey of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Surgery Lasers and Imaging Retina, British Journal of Ophthalmology, Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery, and Annals of Surgical Oncology.
