Anna Mirk
Overview
Dr. Mirk is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of General Medicine and Geriatrics, the Associate Division Director for Education, and the program director for the Emory Geriatric Medicine Fellowship. She graduated from Washington and Lee University (BS) and received her MD from the University of Miami School of Medicine. Dr. Mirk completed her residency in internal medicine at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington and geriatrics fellowship at the Puget Sound Veterans Administration, also in Tacoma. Before coming to Emory and the Atlanta VA, Dr. Mirk served on active duty as an internist and geriatrician in the United States Army. Dr. Mirk is board certified in internal medicine and geriatric medicine. Dr. Mirk is the Associate Director for Clinical Innovation for the Birmingham/Atlanta VA Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC), a VA aging center of excellence. Her area of interest involves polypharmacy and insuring high quality, safe medication prescribing for older adults.
Dr. Mirk is the lead investigator for an ongoing quality improvement project at the Atlanta VA Medical Center, Project IMPROVE (Integrated Management and Polypharmacy Review of Vulnerable Elders). Her clinical practice is based at that Atlanta VA Medical Center, providing geriatric consultation and specialty care in the VA continence clinic.
Dr. Mirk chairs the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program Evaluation Committee, and Geriatrics and Gerontology Education Committee. She is active in teaching through Geriatrics Core Curriculum, Long Term Care Teaching rounds, and local, regional, and national invited lectures on various topics in geriatric medicine.
At the Atlanta VA, she has been a participant in several Quality Improvement and Patient Safety initiatives in the areas of medication reconciliation and improving discharge instructions and the hospital discharge process for Veterans. She is co-chair of the Atlanta VA Dementia Committee, working with an interdisciplinary team to insure access to coordinated care for Veterans and their caregivers. She is the VA Southeast region (VISN7) lead for implementation of the Institute for Health Care Improvement Age-Friendly Health System. Dr. Mirk is a graduate of the Veterans Administration VISN 7 Physician Leadership Training Program.
