Our specialty programs address a wide variety of rheumatic and autoimmune diseases, including IgG4-Related Diseases, Immunotherapy, Myositis, Sarcoidosis, Scleroderma, Sjogren’s Syndrome, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), and Vasculitis.

Our two-year fellowship program produces outstanding leaders in the care of rheumatic disease. Fellows are introduced to the full spectrum of rheumatic disease in the program's diverse clinical rotations.

Lowance Center for Human Immunology

The Lowance Center for Human Immunology, led by Division of Rheumatology director Ignacio Sanz, MD, is a Department of Medicine initiative to cut across traditional academic divisions in medicine and to translate new knowledge in basic immunology to human immune-mediated diseases.

Research Highlight COVID-19 vaccine booster study

The NIH has begun a clinical trial to assess the antibody response to an extra dose of an authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine in people with autoimmune disease who did not respond to an original COVID-19 vaccine regimen. The study is led by Ignacio Sanz, MD.

Featured Grant $3 million awarded to investigate lupus

The Lupus Research Alliance has awarded one of its largest grants to date to a multi-disciplinary team led by Ignacio Sanz, MD. The project will focus on identifying the characteristics of the B cells and plasma cells that create attacking antibodies in the development and progression of severe lupus, specifically in African American patients.
