The Faculty Sponsor: Engaging a New Generation in Radiology
Why Sponsor an Observer?
Serving as a sponsor/mentor for an observer is a very meaningful experience. You play an important role as you encourage bright and talented students on their journey of professional discernment.
Many of our learners are underrepresented in medicine (URiM) or first-generation pre-medical students. You get the honor of "opening the door" for them to access medical experiences that are requisite to the fulfillment of their dreams and aspirations. You also are helping to ensure the radiologists of tomorrow will be as diverse as the communities they serve.
Some observers may become academic radiologists themselves. As a sponsor, you could plant the first seed toward the growth of an extended academic family. Observers/mentees also may seek your guidance on research or community outreach projects as part of their medical or post-graduate training.
What Are the Duties of the Faculty Sponsor?
The faculty sponsor is responsible for the following:
- Providing direct supervision of the observing student for the duration of the observer experience. While the observing student is engaged in observing activities, they must be supervised by either the faculty sponsor or someone to whom the faculty sponsor has delegated supervision when the faculty sponsor is unable to provide direct supervision.
- Ensuring the observing student understands and follows all protocols governing the observer experience, starting with HIPAA compliance through having no direct involvement in patient care.
