Optometry residents Krima S. Shah and Mark Eaves had the opportunity to present their research findings on scleral lenses at the 2025 Global Specialty Lens Symposium, held January 15-18 in Horseshoe, Las Vegas.
This year’s symposium served as an international forum for scleral lens research, and Shah and Eaves contributed to the Friday presentations under the guidance of Emory faculty member and clinician, Dr. Boris Severinsky.
Presentations:
- Optimizing Pediatric Vision: Scleral Lens Rehabilitation in a Case of Post-Traumatic Aphakia
Krima S. Shah, OD, and Boris Severinsky, OD, FAAO - Fitting the Unfit: Profilometry-Guided Solutions for Asymmetric Scleral Shape
Mark Eaves, OD; Boris Severinsky, OD, FAAO, FBCLA, FSLS
About the Researchers:
- Krima S. Shah, OD (2024-2025 resident) is a 2024 graduate of Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry.
- Mark Eaves, OD (2024-2025 resident) is a 2024 graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Optometry.
- Boris Severinsky, OD, FAAO, FBCLA, FSLS joined the Emory Eye Center faculty in March 2018. As part of the optometry team, Dr. Severinsky specializes in fitting and treating both adults and children with specialty contact lenses.
What Are Scleral Lenses?
Scleral lenses are similar to corneal contact lenses but are larger in diameter and rigid, allowing them to maintain their shape. These lenses are used to treat dry eye, corneal and eye surface conditions, and to correct severe refractive errors. Scleral lenses are an important treatment for many eye conditions and, in some cases, may help avoid the need for surgery.
