Clinical Activities
Research Activities (including collaborations)
Drs. Sathian and Buetefisch run outpatient neurorehabilitation clinics at Emory while Dr. Buetefisch also staffs rehabilitation consults from the inpatient stroke service at Emory Hospital.
At the Atlanta VAMC, Dr. Sathian is the attending neurologist at the Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic while Dr. Tansey is the attending neurologist at the Spinal Cord Injury Clinic.
Faculty in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine staff inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services at Emory, and outpatient clinics at the Atlanta VAMC. These services are complemented by a full suite of rehabilitation professionals. Residents in Rehabilitation Medicine staff these services, as well as the services at Shepherd Center.
Elective rotations for Neurology residents can be arranged on any of this entire range of services.

- Functional neuroimaging and transcranial magnetic stimulation studies of stroke rehabilitation (Emory & Atlanta VAMC)
- Behavioral and functional neuroimaging studies of cognitive rehabilitation for memory disorders (Emory & Atlanta VAMC)
- Behavioral and functional neuroimaging studies of low-vision rehabilitation (Emory & Atlanta VAMC)
- Clinical studies and animal models of spinal cord injury (Atlanta VAMC, Emory)
- Retinal repair in animal models (Emory & Atlanta VAMC)
- Neural repair in animal models (Emory & Atlanta VAMC)
Research activities at the Atlanta VAMC are associated with the Rehabilitation R&D Center of Excellence directed by Dr. Sathian.
Research electives can be arranged in any of these areas – this is facilitated by the R25 grant that affords Neurology residents the opportunity to spend 6 months in the laboratory during their residency, to be followed by 12 months during fellowship training.
