Dr. Kathy Lee Bishop Elected as a Distinguished Fellow of the National Academies of Practice in Physical Therapy
DPT faculty Kathy Lee Bishop, PT, DPT have been elected as a Distinguished Fellow of the National Academies of Practice (NAP) in Physical Therapy. A Distinguished Fellow in Policy within NAP is a very high honor that acknowledges her outstanding achievements and her collaborative efforts in the interprofessional community to influence and promote national health policy. Dr. Bishop will join NAP in On March 2020 in San Diego, CA for the Annual Meeting & Forum and the formal induction ceremony. This year’s forum title is “Innovations in Interprofessional Collaboration: Scholarship, Practice and Advocacy.” The sessions will focus on the themes of advocacy for interprofessional collaboration, interprofessional practice models for population health, and person-centered quality healthcare.

DPT Faculty Recognized by the Emory School of Medicine
Several DPT faculty were recognized by the Emory School of Medicine at a recent event held by the school. The awards are a testimony to Emory Physical Therapy faculty’s commitment to teaching, service and research. Kathleen Geist, PT, DPT, COMT, FAAOMPT and Trisha Kesar, PT, PhD were recognized for their promotions to Associate Professor. Bruce Greenfield, PT, MA, PhD, FNAP, FAPTA was recognized for being selected as the Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). The Catherine Worthingham Fellows of the American Physical Therapy Association (FAPTA), is the association’s highest membership category, serves as inspiration for all physical therapists to attain professional excellence. The award honors physical therapists who have demonstrated unwavering efforts to advance the physical therapy profession for more than 15 years, prior to the time of nomination. Joe Nocera, PhD was recognized for the Emory 1% award. The Emory 1% Awards honors and recognizes faculty who have received study section scores in the top 1 percentile on a grant proposal.
Steve Wolf PT, PhD, FAPTA was recognized for achieving the Milli Pub status in May. This means that the paper by Dr. Wolf has been cited in at least 1000 refereed publications. The awards were presented by the SOM Dean Vikas P. Sukhatme MD, ScD on 10/29/2019.
Emory University DPT Students Recognized at the Foundation for Physical Therapy 2019 NEXT Conference
Physical therapist and physical therapist assistant students from across the country were recognized for their fundraising efforts at the 2019 NEXT Conference. Students from more than 150 schools joined forces this school year to raise $266,019 for physical therapy research. Funds raised through the annual Pitt-Marquette Challenge go towards physical therapy research grants and scholarships and support the rigorous scientific review process that helps the Foundation identify the most promising new investigators. Since 2002, 27 research grants and scholarships have been awarded in the name of the Challenge.
The top 3 fundraising schools for the 2018-2019 Pitt-Marquette Challenge were Virginia Commonwealth University ($34,327), the University of Pittsburgh ($22,648), and the University of Delaware ($18,323).
Awards of Excellence were presented to New York University, Sacred Heart University, The Ohio State University, and the University of Miami for raising more than $10,000 each.
Awards of Merit were presented to Boston University, Emory University, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, and the University of Colorado who raised more than $6,000 each.
The annual Pitt-Marquette Challenge is a student-led fundraiser to benefit the Foundation for Physical Therapy Research.
Dr. Bruce Greenfield Selected as a Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association
We are happy to announce that Dr. Bruce Greenfield has been selected as a Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association (FAPTA)! FAPTA is APTA’s highest membership category to recognize members who have demonstrated sustained efforts to advance the physical therapy profession. Dr. Greenfield’s nomination included supportive documentation from many nationally and internationally recognized leaders in our profession who spoke to his prominent leadership, influence and achievements within the physical therapy profession.
Dr. Greenfield joins Division of Physical Therapy faculty members Steve Wolf, PT, PhD, FAPTA and Edee Field-Fote PT, PhD, FAPTA as our prestigious colleagues who have attained the FAPTA level of recognition. Congratulations Dr. Greenfield!
DPT Student Amanda Sharp Wins the CHEP-JHR Essay Contest
Congratulations to Emory University Doctor of Physical Therapy Program graduate student Amanda Sharp, the winner of the national physical therapy student essay contest co-sponsored by the ACAPT Consortium for the Humanities, Ethics, and Professionalism (CHEP) and JHR! This writing competition is designed to encourage deep thinking by students about the role and value of humanities, ethics, and professionalism in academic training and professional life. The second in an annual series, the CHEP-JHR essay contest offers a creative opportunity to ignite critical reflection in PT students across the nation, to support holistic approaches to patient care. This year’s prompt addressed the often perplexing and difficult situations in clinical care where we are pressed to make value judgments of what is right or wrong, or good or bad. Students were asked to write about a clinical situation or experience that contained an ethical issue that was unsettling, or may have resulted in making an ethical judgment, detailing their thoughts, feelings, and responses. In her essay, “Goodbye, With Love,” Ms. Sharp reflects on lessons learned from her hospice experience with her grandfather as she seeks new insights and understandings during a challenging clinical rotation. Her essay will be published in the Spring 2019 issue of JHR.
Dr. Joe Nocera Featured in the GPB Series Your Fantastic Mind
Joe Nocera, PhD, assistant professor in the Division of Physical Therapy and Neurology and exercise scientist at the VA Medical Center, was featured in the Georgia Public Broadcasting series, Your Fantastic Mind.
Dr. Nocera and Keith McGregor, a department of neurology cognitive neuroscientist studying motor learning and aging, are working together to show that exercise is an important factor in brain health.
Dr. Steven L. Wolf Receives the 2019 Dean’s Distinguished Faculty Lecture and Award
The Division of Physical Therapy is proud to announce that Dr. Steven Wolf is the 2019 recipient of the Dean’s Distinguished Faculty Lecture and Award. This award is among the most prestigious and celebratory honor that the School of Medicine can bestow on a faculty member. Nominees are judged on the significance and impact of their scholarly work, the academic ideals embodied by their careers, and their ability to deliver an exemplary lecture with broad appeal. With this award Dr. Wolf joins a group of extremely accomplished individuals who have previously received the award as the epitome of a distinguished faculty member.
Dr. Wolf is a world expert in Physical Therapy, a prolific and innovative researcher and leader who has made seminal contributions to patient care, is a sought after lecturer and teacher who has been a valued mentor to students, residents and faculty. Dr. Wolf’s research has been widely disseminated via more than 300 publications; he has also authored or co-authored nine books that have become major pillars in the fields of physical therapy and rehabilitation medicine. His appearances on National Public Radio and CNN among other media outlets, indicating his ability to communicate and engage with multidisciplinary audiences.
