Kiyoko Takemiya
Overview
Dr. Takemiya is a Cardiology Research Postdoctoral Fellow working with Dr. Bob Taylor. Her project focuses on the development of imaging methods to detect subclinical bacterial infections following implantation of cardiac devices and involves collaborations with Drs. Mark Goodman (Radiology) and Niren Murthy (University of California - Berkley). The goal of her project is to improve outcomes of patients undergoing cardiac device implantation through early detection of bacterial infections. The mortality rate in patients with a cardiac device infection is very high and detection of infections is difficult. Her project takes advantage of the fact that bacteria produce maltohexose which can be detected radiologically using novels dyes developed in Dr. Murthys lab.
Dr. Takemiya won the Young Investigator Award competition at the recent American College of Cardiology meeting for her presentation entitled, A Novel Imaging Probe for the Detection of Subclinical Bacterial Infections Involving Cardiac Devices.
