Edward Lin MD
Overview
Dr. Lin is an acknowledged expert in esophageal, stomach, bowel, and robotic surgery. He is the Chief of the Division of General and GI Surgery, Emory Department of Surgery. He also specializes in bariatric surgery, and was Surgical Director of the Emory Bariatric Center from 2006-2021.
He travels academically teaching laparoscopic and endoscopy techniques, is involved in ongoing studies in the role of gut hormones in appetite control and diabetes, and pioneered single incision laparoscopic techniques for colon and solid organ surgery. He was the first surgeon in the U.S. to perform endoscopic plication for gastroesophageal reflux at Emory University Hospital Midtown in 2004.
Dr. Lin's postgraduate training consisted of a general surgery residency begun at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, New York, NY, 1993-1995, then continued at the New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens, 1995-1996, 1999-2001; a fellowship in the Laboratory of Nutrition and Surgical Metabolism at New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical College, New York, NY, 1996-1997; a fellowship in the Division of Surgical Sciences, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, New Brunswick, NJ, 1997-1999; a laparoscopic and GI surgery fellowship in the Division of General and GI Surgery at Emory University Hospital, 2001-2003; and an MBA from Goizueta Business School at Emory University in 2012.

Research
Focus
- BASIC: Primary research focus is on inflammatory response syndrome and metabolic alterations related to gastrointestinal surgery. Goal is to identify biomarkers (cytokines and gut hormones) through standard molecular biology methodology as well as genomics analysis in patients undergoing surgery. The General Clinical Research Center (NIH-funded) is a critical component of our translational research protocols.
