Rachel Libby, MD, MA discusses her experience in the Global Health Residency Scholars Program
In my final year of training, I was accepted into the Emory Global Health Residency Scholars Program. As part of this program, I met regularly with trainees from multiple different specialties and together we completed a year-long interdisciplinary curriculum in global health. The culmination of this experience was a month-long rotation at Black Lion Hospital/Addis Ababa University in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The rotation gave me the opportunity to work with and learn from the phenomenal residents and faculty at AAU and to experience the delivery of emergency medicine in a new and distinctive environment. By working with AAU physicians to care for patients, organize didactics, and create medical simulations, I gained the experience and knowledge that will be instrumental in a career in global health. Furthermore, the relationships formed in Addis have continued and are important avenues for learning and collaboration. Getting to experience emergency medicine in Ethiopia was a powerful reminder of how a shared commitment--to deliver the best possible emergency care to our patients--can bring people together.
