Recently, Dr. Melissa White received a letter from a PICU attending, Dr. Jana Stockwell, that stressed how our EM residents are so incredibly hardworking and dedicated. Drs. Jordi Fonts and Tyler Giberson were highlighted in the following letter that describes what an amazing job they did on their rotation. Great work, Dr. Fonts and Dr. Giberson!
Letter from Jana A. Stockwell, MD, FCCM, FAAP
I had the experience of being on a number of weekends and calls this past month in the PICU, most often with two EM residents, Dr. Jordi Fonts and Dr. Tyler Giberson. They were both outstanding. Attentive to detail, great with patient assessments, always present when needed, and just pleasant to work with.
My last night on call with them, Friday, June 28, was initially calm. However, it deteriorated in the middle of the night when an infant with platelet dysfunction and pulmonary hemorrhage decompensated, needing eCPR with emergent placement onto VA ECMO. For 50+ minutes Jordi and Tyler did chest compressions on this infant, alternating q 2 min. They did this while basically draped over each other and crammed between an ECMO pump, boom, and a surgeon and under the surgeons’ sterile drapes the entire time. Throughout, they provided excellent compressions, evidenced by pulse oximetry waveform. Although this baby is still on the pump and heavily sedated, her pupils remain active, renal and hepatic numbers never bumped, and her EEG is looking good. Without their efforts, this child would have been neurologically devastated. Although she has a long road in front of her, there would have been no road for her at all without their diligence.
My calls and service time blend in, so I do not recall specifics, but throughout their rotation, both of these physicians have been superb, not just in this instance. Likely, this was not their only resuscitation in the PICU and I believe they got a few procedures in (though as we know that is hit or miss). I realize that your EM residents do not always think that the PICU rotation is beneficial, but this month the PICU benefitted from the EM residents!
