Dr. Michelle Lall, MD, MHS, FACEP, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, Assistant Residency Director, and Chair of the department’s Wellness Committee. Dr. Lall discusses her approach, priorities, motivational background, and issues in promoting wellness among EM professionals in the interview with Christina Shenvi, MD, PhD.

Bryan McNally, MD, MPH, testified before the Emergency Cardiac Care Centers Study Committee of the Georgia State Senate. Dr. McNally is Executive Director of CARES, the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival, a shared database created by the Emory University Department of Emergency Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control. The Senate is studying the possibility of creating a designation for Emergency Cardiac Care Centers in Georgia analogous to Certified Stroke Centers.

The Scientific Assembly of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) 2016 annual meeting has named Alex Isakov, MD, MPH, its Rookie Speaker of the Year for his contributions to the 2015 meeting. Radioactive Training Program by EM Toxicology Section
18 medical physicists from different countries took part in a radioactive materials training hosted by The Emory Department of Emergency Medicine Medical Toxicology Section. This program was a collaboration between the CDC, The International Atomic Energy Agency, The Argonne National Laboratory, and the RAEC Training site. Participants were trained on the evaluation of patients contaminated with radioactive materials, and the training took place at the School of Medicine's Center for Experiential Learning.

The American Heart Association Mission: Lifeline program has recognized Metro Atlanta Ambulance Service, where Emory EM's Dr. Julio Lairet is Medical Director, with a 2016 Gold Medal. American Medical Response (DeKalb), whose Medical Director is Dr. Lekshmi Kumar of Emory EM, is the recipient of a Silver Medal. These agencies are recognized among others nationally in their communities for meeting or exceeding performance standards for the management of patients with ST-segment elevation MI.

Emory Awarded NIEHS Worker Training Program (WTP) Grant
Emory University is one of eight organizations in the country to be awarded grant funding from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) for its Worker Training Program (WTP). The WTP "will oversee the Ebola Biosafety and Infectious Disease Response Training, which will educate health care workers, as well as personnel in waste management, transportation, mortuaries, and other occupations with the potential for infectious disease exposure" (NIEHS, 2016). The three-year program is a collaboration among NIEHS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and other federal agencies.

Dr. Melissa White receives Distinguished Georgia EMS Medical Director Award
Dr. Melissa White has been awarded the 2016 Charles B. Gillespie, M.D. Distinguished Georgia EMS Medical Director Award. The award is presented by the Georgia Association of Emergency Medical Services to an EMS physician who provides exemplary and exceptional service that benefits and supports emergency medical technicians, and who shows continuing dedication to the principles of medical ethics and has made outstanding contributions to the community in citizenship and public service above and beyond the call of duty as a practicing physician.
Emergency Medicine Supports Grady Health Foundation at White Coat Grady Gala
The White Coat Grady Gala was held on Saturday, March 19th at the Georgia Aquarium. The event honors healthcare heroes and raises funds for the Grady Health Foundation. This year, the event raised $1.6 million to support the needs of the Grady Health System, and to date, the event has raised more than $7 million. The Emory Department of Emergency Medicine was pleased to support our Grady partners.
Dr. Ziad Kazzi named President of Middle East North Africa Toxicology Association
Dr. Ziad Kazzi, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Director of the International Toxicology Postdoctoral Fellowship, has been appointed as President of Middle East North Africa Toxicology Association (MENATOX). MENATOX aims to facilitate communication between all its members, promote collaborations that advance the care of poisoned patients, and establish meaningful research endeavors to achieve self-sustainability and better plan health care delivery. Dr. Kazzi co-founded the organization in 2008 and has held a leadership role since its inception.
Emory EM faculty instrumental in ACEP's updated online observation services toolkit
The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) has produced an Observations Services Toolkit, now available to members on their website. ACEP members from Emory Emergency Medicine are substantial contributors to the Toolkit. This resource, developed by the EM Practice Committee of ACEP, aggregates information and links to help organizations set up their own Observation Medicine Services units within EM departments.
Dr. Donald Stein Receives Henry Stonnington Award for Brain Injury Manuscript
Brain Injury, the journal of the International Brain Injury Association, has awarded Dr. Donald Stein with the Henry Stonnington Award for his manuscript - "Embracing failure: What the Phase III progesterone studies can teach about TBI clinical trials." The Journal describes the manuscript as exceptional work and praised Dr. Stein for his work in the field of Brain Injury. Dr. Stein will be presented with the award at the Eleventh World Congress on Brain Injury in June 2016. Congratulations, Dr. Stein on yet another remarkable accomplishment.
Dr Alex Isakov receives NAEMSP 2016 Outstanding Contribution to EMS Award
The National Association of EMS Physicians has named Alex Isakov, MD, MPH, the recipient of this year’s Keith Neely Outstanding Contribution to EMS Award, recognizing his work to improve the EMS community’s preparedness and competency to manage and transport patients with serious communicable diseases, and his leadership at NAEMSP and nationally on this subject.

Sheryl Heron, MD, MPH, of Emory Emergency Medicine, and her co-editors have published Diversity and Inclusion in Quality Patient Care. Described by the publisher, Springer, as the "first textbook dedicated to the ideas of cultural competency and diversity in emergency medicine with a focus on quality of patient care," the collection includes contributions by Emory EM physicians Leon Haley, Edward Stettner, Tammie Quest, and Jason Liebzeit.
