Sonal Oza Receives PM&R Foundation Grant
Emory - 9/6/24
Sonal Oza has received a PM&R Foundation grant for "Functional and pain outcomes among cancer patients receiving botulinum toxin." The funding agency is the Tactile Medical Cancer Rehabilitation Research Grant Awarded through the Foundation for PM&R. Patients with cancer are at risk of developing focal dystonia and muscle spasms after surgery and radiation therapy. This is especially seen among breast cancer and head & neck cancer patients. While botulinum toxin is commonly used in clinical practice to improve muscle pain, posturing, and range of motion, no prospective studies have been conducted in the cancer rehabilitation setting. We are conducting a multi-site, prospective observational study to capture patient-reported pain and functional outcomes pre- and post-botulinum toxin injection. Participating sites include Cedars Sinai (Philip Chang, DO), City of Hope (Jessica Cheng, MD), Emory University (Sonal Oza MD, Ashish Khanna MD), University of Michigan (Sean Smith, MD), University of Pennsylvania (Jasmine Zheng, MD) and UT Southwestern (Mike Fediw, MD).
