Ira Horowitz MD
Overview
Ira R. Horowitz is the Director, The Emory Clinic, and Physician Group President, Emory Healthcare. He is also the Executive Associate Dean of Faculty and Clinical Affairs and the Medical Director, Office of Risk and Insurance Services, Emory Healthcare. In addition to his administrative roles, Dr. Horowitz is a practicing gynecologic oncologist and a member of the Winship Cancer Institute.
Dr. Horowitz served as John D. Thompson Professor and Chair, Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia from 2010-2016. He previously served as Division Director of Gynecologic Oncology and the Pelvic Surgery Fellowship Director for nearly 20 years, as well as Chief Medical Officer, Emory University Hospital, for 10 years. Dr. Horowitz joined the Emory faculty in 1992, having previously been on the faculty at The Johns Hopkins Universitys School of Medicine. His areas of clinical interest include all gynecologic malignancies, including cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, and vulvar cancer, and he has published extensively in the field of gynecologic oncology, authoring more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, review articles, book chapters, books, and book reviews. He has been listed as one of Atlanta Magazines Top Doctors annually since 2009.
Dr. Horowitz completed his medical degree and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He conducted his fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions in Baltimore. He received a Masters in Healthcare Management from Harvard School of Public Health in 2004. Dr. Horowitz is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, with subspecialty certification in Gynecologic Oncology.

Research
Focus
- My research focus centers around the epidemiology of cervical carcinoma and ovarian cancer. Through collaboration with the Centers of Disease control and Prevention, my research has spanned from Atlanta to Abidjan, Cote DIvoire. Presently, I am investigating the role of lipid peroxidase in preinvasive and invasive malignancies. Nationally, I am actively involved in collaborative clinical trials.
