M4 Family Medicine Elective Rotation
Emory Family Medicine offers an elective rotation to Emory M4 students from September-June and to visiting M4 students from September-February. The rotation consists of 2 weeks on the inpatient service at Emory University Midtown Hospital and 2 outpatient weeks at the Family Medicine Clinic at Dunwoody. The elective course official name is FPM-MD 920_FP02: Family & Preventive Medicine, Family Medicine Elective. Application information and instructions for visiting students are here: https://www.med.emory.edu/education/admissions/visiting/index.html, and all applications are conducted through the VSLO system for students at AAMC schools in the US and Puerto Rico and the International Visiting Student Application for students at international medical schools (links included at the above site). The applications open in mid-March.
Emory Family Medicine does not offer audition rotations to medical school graduates or M3 students.
Family Medicine M4 Elective Highlights:
- Supervised care of inpatients and outpatients with a wide variety of diseases and conditions, including obstetric care, pediatric care, and management of acute and chronic diseases and their complications.
- Students are expected to function at the level of a sub-intern, and participate in morning report, didactics, before clinic conferences, and teaching sessions.
Additional Elective Opportunities
Additional elective courses in Family Medicine are offered only to senior medical students at Emory and are graded as Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory. Current electives include:
Sports Medicine
- This 4-week elective is offered jointly through the Department of Orthopedics and Family Medicine and is offered throughout the year. The course is directed by Dr. Neeru Jayanthi, a family physician and program director for the Sports Medicine Fellowship.
- The elective is designed to be an optimum learning experience for any student interested in improving their musculoskeletal physical exam skills, evaluations, and treatments.
- Each student will spend two weeks on the Orthopaedic Trauma Service at Grady Memorial Hospital and two weeks at Emory Orthopaedics and Spine Center.
Hispanic Health in Resource-Limited Environments
- This elective is offered in collaboration with faculty in the Department of OB/GYN, Pediatrics, and the Emory PA program and is offered to Emory medical students and physician assistant students.
- The purpose of this elective is to expose students to the challenges of providing health care to Hispanic patients, especially in a resource-poor environment.
- The 4-week course is offered only during the month of June and consists of 1 week of didactics, 1 week of working in a community clinic that serves Latinx patients, 1 week either in Puerto Rico or Cuba, and 1-week providing care at the South Georgia Farmworker Project.
