SOM Awards
SOM Clinical Distinctions Pathway
The Clinical Distinctions (CD) designation program is designed to recognize faculty who have devoted a majority of their time and careers to providing excellence in clinical care. While the CD is not intended to compete with or replace the standard academic promotions mechanism for faculty advancement, it emphasizes the critical contributions of clinically focused faculty in the School of Medicine (SOM). Regular faculty who have a minimum 0.5 FTE and devote at least half their time to clinical efforts (patient care and clinical administration) are eligible for these distinctions. These distinctions, ranging from Physician to Eminent Physician, are outlined on the SOM Intranet site here.
The Clinical Service tiers are not dependent on, nor do they replace, academic rank.
- September 8 – Deadline to submit names of nominees for Senior Physician (minimum of >4 years in service)
- November 1 – Deadline to submit names of nominees for Distinguished Physician (minimum of >8 years in service)
- January 4 – Deadline to submit names of nominees for Eminent Physician (minimum of >12 years in service)
To be considered, faculty submit their intent to the Department of Emergency Medicine's CDP Committee Chair Dr. Matt Keadey and Administrator Donna Weaver. The candidate will then submit:
- CV (SOM format)
- Clinical Service Statement
- Letter cosigned by the Chair, Division Director, and Service Chief with supporting metrics
- Letters of support
- Optional criteria (2 letters of support from staff, patient comments)

Advocacy is defined as seeking structural and policy change on behalf of patients, learners, and communities in ways that promote health equity, advance medical education, and/ or improve patient care and outcomes.
