Department of Emergency Medicine Appointments, Promotions, and Tenure Committee
Promotion to Associate Professor and Professor is a time-intensive and multi-phase process. Your Faculty Advocate will help you construct a path towards promotion that aligns with your interests and career goals. Advocates are asked to submit names of faculty who they believe are ready for promotion consideration by the Department of EM Appointments, Promotions, and Tenure (APT) Committee. The APT committee consists of diverse EM faculty from multiple hospital sites and is charged with assessing the promotion-readiness of our faculty. The committee meets every Fall to review faculty submitted by their Advocates and makes recommendations to the Department Chair on advancement to the School of Medicine’s Faculty Committee on Appointments and Promotions (FCAP). Per SOM guidelines, the final decision on advancement to FCAP is made by the Department Chair.
One of the best pieces of advice to make the promotion process as smooth as possible is to stay organized. Your CV is the backbone of your promotion packet and should be a living document that is regularly updated (yearly updates are a SOM requirement but ideal to update as soon as possible after a new publication, presentation, committee membership, etc.).
In order to be considered for promotion by the APT committee, faculty must submit an up-to-date CV in SOM format, a completed promotion-readiness worksheet (PRW), and a draft personal statement. Please see the templates and guides below.
