Ashish B. Patel, MD, MBA, associate professor of radiation oncology at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University, has been named the new medical director of radiation oncology at Emory Decatur Hospital and Emory Hillandale Hospital. Patel's appointment is a critical element in Winship's strategic partnership with the former DeKalb Medical hospitals.
Patel joins Winship from MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper in Camden, NJ where he served as clinical director of radiation oncology and as chief quality officer. Patel focuses on caring for patients with gastrointestinal or gynecologic cancers and treatment approaches including brachytherapy and stereotactic body radiotherapy.
Patel completed his residency at the University of Maryland in Baltimore and received his MBA from the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago. He earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia after graduating from Emory College with a bachelor's degree in biology.
As medical director, Patel will further integrate radiation oncology care and research at Emory Decatur Hospital and Emory Hillandale Hospital with Winship.
"Initially, my focus will be on aligning policies and procedures and standardizing treatment plans with Winship, upgrading equipment at Emory Decatur Hospital, and opening clinical trials under the Winship umbrella so patients at both locations can have access to the latest treatments and techniques offered by Winship specialists," says Patel.
His long-term goals include expanding multidisciplinary cancer care within these facilities by adding and integrating with Winship tumor boards and establishing multidisciplinary clinics for breast and gynecologic cancers at Emory Decatur Hospital.
"We are absolutely thrilled to have Dr. Patel join our team," says Winship Executive Director and Lawrence W. Davis Professor and Chairman in Radiation Oncology Walter J. Curran, Jr., MD. "As medical director, Patel will strategically guide this new department, with our ultimate goal being to improve the lives of patients with cancer in the state of Georgia and beyond."
"Patel's expertise in radiation oncology leadership will greatly benefit the Emory Hillandale and Emory Decatur locations as they began to integrate further with Winship and into the Emory Healthcare system," says Jim Forstner, chief executive officer of Emory Decatur and Emory Hillandale.
