The growing importance of Quality Improvement (QI) in both academic and non-academic settings needs no emphasis. It is now required for house-staff by ACGME as well as for faculty for Maintenance of Certification (MOC), and board examinations at all levels test knowledge on this topic. The Department of Pediatrics QI curriculum for pediatric fellows will be a half-day session consisting of the following:
Patient Safety:
·One is Not Zero: Error Prevention Training
QI 101:
·QI Methods: Lean, Six Sigma, Model for Improvement
·QI Tools: SMART Aim, Process Mapping, Fishbone diagram, key driver diagram, Pareto chart
·QI Measurement: types of Measures, Run Charts and Process Charts, Common and Special cause variation
Reliability Science
Included throughout the lectures will be examples of real-life QI projects conducted at Children’s. Practical application of many of the concepts will be discussed using non-medical examples in this multidisciplinary setting. Also, we will discuss how to choose a QI project, and differences between QI and research.
At the completion of the above core series, fellows will be equipped with the basic knowledge to start their own QI project with supervision by a content expert (faculty member from the subspecialty area of the project topic) and a QI expert – both will jointly supervise the fellow(s) in their QI project.
