Welcome to the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Emory University. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is located at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston (Children's at Egleston). Children's Healthcare of Atlanta serves metropolitan Atlanta and surrounding areas with a population of nearly 6 million, and thus has one of the largest pediatric service areas in the country.

Children's at Egleston, a freestanding 297 bed pediatric hospital, serves as the primary academic, research and teaching hospital for the system, and provides quaternary-level pediatric care for the children in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The hospital is located directly adjacent to the Emory University undergraduate and School of Medicine campuses. It is the home to training in pediatrics for Emory medical students, residents, and post-doctoral fellows, see also the link: Department of Pediatrics. Children's at Egleston manages approximately 220,000 patient visits annually and 75,000 Emergency Department visits. Children's at Egleston also features the Children's ECMO and Advanced Technologies Center which provides services including ECMO, CRRT and plasmapheresis to neonatal, cardiac and other pediatric patients.

The PICU naturally serves with the other hospital ICUs to care for the most acute of these patients. Our PICU is a 36 bed state-of-the-art medical-surgical interdisciplinary unit whose facilities opened in September 2007. Each room is single occupancy with airflow isolation, dual articulated equipment booms, mobile computers, and capabilities in all for full organ failure support, including ECMO or continuous renal replacement therapy, and space for families to sleep.

The PICU at Children's at Egleston is staffed by 15 board certified Care Medicine (CCM) specialists and supports a fully accredited Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program. Critical Care Medicine physicians provide care for children with the full range of pediatric critical care illness including respiratory, cardiovascular, renal and liver dysfunction. The unit provides the full array of advanced respiratory support, including non-invasive positive pressure ventilation, high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, and inhaled nitric oxide and isoflurane. The unit has an active extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) program as well as continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) service and provision of therapeutic plasma exchange. The ECMO Center at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta is a national and international leader in pediatric ECMO with more than >1,000 cases. To learn more about our ECMO services please click here: ECMO. The PICU at Egleston cares for bone marrow transplant and solid organ transplant recipients. In addition CCM physicians provide consultative support for a wide array of post-operative patients, including complex general, trauma, orthopedic, ENT surgery and neurosurgical procedures, all available 24/7.

Children's Response is one of the largest transport teams in the country, handling >5,000 transports each year. It enables efficient and rapid transport with a dedicated pediatric team. Children's Response has 8 state-of-the-art mobile intensive care units, two helicopters, and a fixed-wing service arrangement as well; click here for more on Transport.
