Janice Lea MD
Overview
Janice P. Lea, MD, MSc, FASN is a professor of medicine at Emory University and is board-certified in nephrology and hypertension. Dr. Lea graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in biology. She earned her medical degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and completed her residency in internal medicine and a nephrology fellowship at Emory University-affiliated hospitals. She also received an MSc in clinical research from Emorys Rollins School of Public Health.
Dr. Lea is the chief medical director of Emory Dialysis and is a nationally renowned expert in hypertension - designated a Clinical Specialist in Hypertension by the American Society of Hypertension.
Dr. Leas research and clinical interests are in hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and dialysis, with numerous publications. Dr. Lea has served as the Emory principal investigator for the NIH study African-American Study of Hypertension and Kidney Disease and the National Medical Spokesperson for the National Kidney Disease Education Program (NKDEP), sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. In addition, she is a member of the Medical Advisory Board for the United States Renal Data Systems and has served on the Board of Directors for the Southeastern Kidney Council. Dr. Lea is also an active member of the American Society of Nephrology, National Kidney Foundation, and the International Society of Hypertension in Blacks. She has been an invited guest speaker to numerous national conferences, including those of the American Heart Association, American Society of Nephrology, American Society of Hypertension, National Medical Association, and the Congressional Black Caucus. Throughout her career at Emory, she has served on numerous Emory University School of Medicine committees, and she is currently a member of the Medical Practice Committee at Emory University Hospital Midtown.
Dr. Leas efforts in service to Emory and to the national renal community were recognized by Emorys Department of Medicine in 2014, when she received the Nanette K. Wenger Service Award. She is also a distinguished Woodruff Leadership Academy Fellow. Her clinical practice is based at Emory University Hospital Midtown and focuses on difficult cases in hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and dialysis. She attends on the general nephrology services at Emory University Hospital Midtown and regularly lectures to medical students and residents. Dr. Lea has received high scores in teaching and patient satisfaction and has been named one of Atlantas Top Doctors for the past eight years.
