Sandra is originally from Snyder, Texas. The events of September 11, 2001, inspired her to enlist in the Air Force, where she became a medic. During this time, she developed a love of medicine and decided to become a physician. She attended college at University of North Texas, then was awarded the military Health Professions Scholarship for medical school at University of Texas School of Medicine at San Antonio. After medical school she completed a prelim year in general surgery in Spartanburg, SC, before going on Air Force active duty as a Flight Surgeon. Over the next four years she was stationed in Okinawa, Japan and Hurlburt Field, FL, and supported missions and exercises throughout the Eastern Asia and the Pacific. After receiving an honorable discharge, she completed her residency in anesthesiology at the University of Oklahoma before moving to Atlanta for her critical care fellowship. When not in the hospital, Sandra can be found enjoying the outdoors with her husband, Jeff and their 3 dogs or exploring a beautiful corner of the world.
Academic interests: Global Health, Addressing heath disparities, and Encouraging women to pursue careers in STEM, aerospace medicine, wilderness medicine
Future plans: Work in academic mixed ICU/anesthesia practice while developing international partnerships to implement methods to reduce healthcare disparities worldwide.
