About Us
The Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology of Emory University is based at the Egleston Hospital campus of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta with attending faculty members dedicated to the practice of pediatric anesthesiology.
Our division provides anesthetic care for a comprehensive range of procedures on children both in and out of the operating room environment. These include:
- General surgery
- ENT
- Urology
- Ophthalmology
- Neurosurgery
- Orthopedic
- Cardiac
- Solid organ transplant procedures
As well as procedures performed in interventional radiology and in various diagnostic radiology locations, endoscopy suites, and cardiac catheterization labs.
A growing regional pain service provides perioperative pain management to appropriate patients while a chronic pain clinic provides outpatient services to affected children. Patients present as both outpatients and inpatients. Egleston Hospital is noted to have one of the highest acuity inpatient populations among children’s hospitals in the country.
Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship
A 12-month ACGME accredited pediatric anesthesiology fellowship is sponsored in our Emory's Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology by Emory University. Six months are spent learning to provide anesthetic care for children undergoing procedures both in and out of the operating room. Two months are devoted to the cardiac anesthesiology service and another two months are spent on the pain service. Fellows join the critical care medicine team in the pediatric intensive care unit for one month. The remaining month is comprised of experiences in the neonatal intensive care unit, the preoperative clinic, and the PACU or is spent working on a defined clinical research project. An additional 12-month program in pediatric cardiac anesthesiology is available to interested fellows after successful completion of this initial pediatric anesthesiology training.
Didactic Series
A comprehensive didactic series supports the clinical experience. One series of discussions is presented for anesthesiology residents while parallel series are presented for pediatric anesthesiology and pediatric cardiac anesthesiology fellows throughout the year. A monthly simulation experience and a monthly M&M conference are provided for both residents and fellows. Additionally, our fellows participate in monthly journal club and case conference discussions and are taught principles of quality improvement with the culmination in a quality improvement project that is presented by the group at Emory University’s annual Quality Fair.
Research
Many of our faculty are involved in clinical or quality research projects in which residents and fellows can participate and from which abstracts are frequently submitted to various annual anesthesiology meetings.
The clinical and didactic experience gained in our program gives residents a solid foundation in pediatric anesthesiology and allows graduating fellows to be well prepared for successful completion of the pediatric anesthesiology subspecialty certification examination and a career in pediatric anesthesiology.
