Thank you for your interest in Emory University General Psychiatry Residency Program. We offer thirteen PGY-1 positions (eleven categorical and two research track). Each year we typically receive more than 1,500 applications and interview approximately 180 candidates. We conduct a holistic review of application materials and base our candidate selection on a number of factors. We examine applicants’ academic achievement and clinical acumen, interpersonal qualities including self-motivation and intellectual curiosity, diversity and inclusion considerations, leadership activities and research and scholarly potential.

Application Criteria
Applicants from osteopathic and allopathic medical schools are ALL considered according to the criteria below. We only accept PGY-1 applications for the NRMP Match through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). All applications are reviewed for consideration of invitation to interview. Applications will be downloaded beginning September 25, 2024, and the deadline for applications is December 31, 2024. Candidates are encouraged to apply early as interview slots are limited.
Within NRMP and ERAS, we offer two tracks:
- Psychiatry (“Psychiatry,” NRMP Program Code: 1113400C0)
- Research Track (“Psychiatry/Research,” NRMP Program Code: 1113400C1)
To complete the application process for a PGY-1 position, the following materials must be completed in ERAS:
- MyERAS application
- Curriculum vitae (CV)
- Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE)
- Medical School Transcript
- Personal Statement
- USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX scores, USMLE Step 2 score is not required, but is encouraged.
- Minimum of three, maximum of four letters of recommendation

Interview Details
All interviews for the 2024-2025 recruitment season will be conducted virtually, including those for local trainees. Interview invitations will be released on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In the event of a cancelation or unexpected event, an invitation may be extended on an alternate day. Interviews are scheduled by invitation on a rolling basis and are held on select Mondays and Fridays beginning in late October through mid-January from approximately 8am to 2pm EST. The residents will host meet and greet zoom meetings the evening prior to the assigned interview day.

Prior to your interview, you will receive additional information about the program, and you will have an opportunity to review a sample contract.
Program Signaling and Application Screening
Program signals will be considered in the selection of interview candidates but are not the sole basis for the interview selection. All applications will be reviewed, and no screening based on any criteria will be utilized. In accordance with the current AAMC guidelines, applicants should signal all programs to which they are the most interested in, including applicants completing a visiting elective at Emory and home applicants.
Applicants with Prior Residency Training
Applicants with prior residency training are considered with all other applicants according to the criteria above. Applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis based on availability of a position. If applying for a PGY-2 position, you may apply through ERAS or you may submit a paper application to the Residency Education Office. Download the paper application. The required application materials include: curriculum vitae, psychiatry personal statement, medical student transcript, program director letter of recommendation, and USMLE or COMLEX scores.
International Applicants
International applicants are considered. International Medical Graduates seeking a residency position must be certified by the ECFMG and enter the program on a visa, unless a citizen of the United States or holding an Alien Registration Card. The Emory University Office of Graduate Medical Education will sponsor a J-1 visa to any international medical school student that is offered a position in the department. H-1B visas may be sponsored on a case-by-case basis.
