Mentorship

• Encourages mentorship in various spheres
• Examples include work/life integration, teaching/medical education, transition to practice

• Interns are assigned a senior resident mentor
• Senior resident serves as a guide and source of support during the transition to residency

• Facilitated through the research track but can include non-research track residents
• Supports residents in academics scholarly endeavors (e.g. travel support to academic meetings)

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences recognizes the importance of faculty and peer mentorship in fostering a supportive learning environment where residents can grow as physicians, develop professional identities and explore diverse career interests. Incoming PGY-1 residents are paired with a senior resident mentor who serves as a guide and source of support during the transition from medical student to residency. In addition, residents are encouraged to develop mentoring relationships with faculty throughout training based on their individual interests and career goals. Faculty mentorship may focus on areas such as clinical practice, work-life integration, medical education, leadership, psychotherapy, research or transition to practice. Residents pursuing scholarly or academic careers are also supported through individualized research mentorship. Faculty mentors help residents identify research opportunities, develop scholarly projects and navigate academic career development, including support for presentations at regional and national meetings. Our goal is to ensure that every resident has access to meaningful mentorship relationships that evolve throughout residency and support both professional and personal growth.
