2020-2021 PGY-4 Residents

Ian J. Cooke, MD, MPH

Ian Cooke
  • Undergrad: Emory

  • MD: Northwestern University

  • Why Emory: I couldn't have chosen a better place to train, between the diverse patient population, faculty truly invested in teaching, and full breadth of urology we get to experience here. Plus, Atlanta is a great place to live!

  • 5-year plan: Figure out life after residency.

  • Interests within urology: General urology, reconstructive urology, oncology.

  • Hobbies: Capoeira, rock climbing.

  • What would you be doing if not urology: Probably general surgery. If not medicine, perhaps I'd run away to join the circus.

  • Random fact: I have a cat, his name is Mango.

Nourhan "Noura" Ismaeel, MD

Nourhan Ismaeel
  • Undergrad: University of Houston

  • MD: McGovern Medical School at UTHealth

  • Why Emory? Because of the breadth of experiences offered. After coming to Emory, I have formed so many great life-long friendships.

  • 5-year plan: To be practicing urology and living in either Texas or Colorado.

  • Interests within urology: Stones and infertility.

  • Hobbies: Cooking, traveling, hiking, and painting (not well).

  • What would you be doing if not urology? I would be running a bed and breakfast.

  • Random fact: I am bilingual and double jointed.

Reza Nabavizadeh, MD

Reza Nabavizadeh
  • Undergrad: University of Toronto

  • MD: Virginia Commonwealth University SOM

  • Why Emory? Emory is the only academic and residency program in a city as large as Atlanta. Emory also provides excellent surgical training through both a tertiary care center and a high-acuity community hospital. The combination of Emory University Hospital and Grady Memorial Hospital makes Emory unique. The size of the coverage area translates into a wide variety of disease presentation and pathology. Additionally, Atlanta is a great and lively city where there's always something to do, and the food is great. However, probably the most important reason I chose Emory is because of the people! I felt connected with the residents during my interview time. It was nice to see how close they were with each other. The friendship bonds plus a great training program in a beautiful city is what makes my every day job enjoyable.

  • 5-year plan: Survive this pandemic and global warming! Also finishing training and being able to help out my patients.

  • Interests within urology: Urologic oncology.

  • Hobbies: Tennis, chess (we can play virtually and I will win!).

  • What would you be doing if not urology? Web design or perhaps a chef (a good one!) in a Persian restaurant!

  • Random fact: I got face to face with a massive Canadian moose while kayaking in a shallow river in Algonquin National Park, Ontario... and the moose was the one who ran away!!

Timothy P. Quinn, MD

Tim Quinn
  • Undergrad: University of Michigan

  • MD: Wayne State University SOM

  • Why Emory? Emory has the unique situation of being the only academic center with a urology program in a major metropolitan area. This ensures we see a large variety of cases and have a surplus of cases for residents to assist with. Atlanta itself is a beautiful and blossoming city with a large variety of neighborhoods. I have grown to love it.

  • 5-year plan: Pursue a one year fellowship in men's health and infertility after residency.

  • Interests within urology: Men's health, infertility and endourology.

  • Hobbies: Woodworking, hiking and camping, furniture design, and building.

  • What would you be doing if not urology? I would like to think I would be working in furniture design and interior design.

  • Random fact: I bungee jumped Victoria Falls, and yes, it was terrifying.
