Emory general surgery residents Adriana Gamboa, MD, Michael Turgeon, MD, and Rachel Lee, MD, MSPH, and medical oncology fellow Ibrahim Sahin, MD, received Conquer Cancer Merit Awards from the Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) at the 2020 Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium in San Francisco.
Merit Awards are distributed to residents and fellows whose research is addressed in high-quality abstracts that exhibit cogent science, and recipients are honored with the opportunity to present their abstract.
Dr. Gamboa presented "Impact of postoperative complications on oncologic outcomes after rectal cancer surgery: An analysis of the United States Rectal Cancer Consortium"; Dr. Lee, "A novel preoperative risk score to optimize patient selection for performing concomitant liver resection with cytoreductive surgery/HIPEC"; Dr. Turgeon, "A United States Rectal Cancer Consortium study of inferior mesenteric artery versus superior rectal artery ligation: How high do we need to go?"; and Dr. Ibrahim, "Clinical and molecular markers of immune checkpoint inhibitor response in dMMR colorectal cancer patients."
Drs. Gamboa, Lee, and Turgeon are being mentored by surgical oncologist-scientist Shishir K. Maithel, MD. Dr. Lee is also being co-mentored by Maria Russell, MD, and Dr. Turgeon by Gregory Lesinski, PhD. This is the sixth year in a row that residents working in Dr. Maithel's lab have been recognized with Merit Awards, and the second time Dr. Gamboa has won the award.
